With or without Froome, Sky have never truly been title contenders in the WCh TTT - their sole medal was a bronze in 2013.

The individual events are now underway. In the junior women's ITT, Karlijn Swinkels (NED) took the first rainbow jersey of these champs, with the minor medals going to Lisa Morzenti (ITA) and Juliette Labous (FRA) respectively.

Full results for the champs are available on the Tissot Timing site.

-----

Marco Mathis (GER), the early leader in the U23 men's ITT, rode at an average speed of 50.7km/h. Expect some high average speeds in the heat (like when Rohan Dennis did 55.4km/h (!) in stage 1 of the 2015 TdF).

And wouldn't you know it, Mathis had the middle of the hot-seat to himself all day!

Behind him, compatriots Maximilian Schachmann (silver last year) and Lennard Kämna (bronze last year) get silver and fourth place, with Miles Scotson (AUS) denying the Germans a clean sweep.

Eddie Dunbar gets Ireland into the top ten; Jon Dibben and Tao Geoghegan Hart were 15th and 26th respectively.

I dipped in and out..........four and a half hours of an ITT with riders you've never heard of is a bit of a struggle.......

..............and Carlton with all that time to fill was particularly annoying

I prefer team time trials as there's a lot more variables and tactics

The UCI usually makes some of its decisions on important matters at Road WCh; this week they may decide to make a few alterations to track disciplines.

Speaking of which, BC has picked its squad for the upcoming Track ECh (19-23 October) in Paris, which includes just 3 Rio Olympians. It's an ideal opportunity for the 'next generation' to cut their teeth at elite championship level, what with it being the start of another Olympic cycle and all.

One of the sprinters named is Rachel James, who won a couple of 'tandem B' world titles as a pilot for Sophie Thornhill in 2014. Looks like Becky's sister has switched squads then.

Looking further ahead, the British Track Championships have been shifted back a few months, so this season's edition will take place in January 2017.

Really is getting a bit messy for Wiggins and Team Sky with even his own ex team-mates trying to stick the knife in!

In the junior men's ITT, Brandon McNulty (USA; last year's bronze medallist) takes the stripes. His compatriot Ian Garrison also makes the podium with Mikkel Bjerg (DEN) separating the two.

McNulty's time would have won him a bronze medal in the U23 variant.

Live coverage of the elite women's ITT begins in a few minutes. Contrary to what it says, Villumsen is not riding today.

Considering she's not a specialist, it looks like Hannah Barnes put in a good ride to top the first 'wave'. She'll be no worse than 32nd (out of 41) by the end of proceedings.

Barnes was timed at 39:00.37 for the course.

In comparison, Amber Neben (USA; 2008 world champion) currently leads with 36:37.04! That could stand for a while.

Neben's time from the second 'wave' survives the third 'wave'! Ellen van Dijk was clocked at 36:43.03, so no second rainbow jersey for her.

Barnes will finish no lower than 17th. Hayley Simmonds was clocked at 40:24.22 - no worse than 25th, but still disappointing considering her recent performances in the domestic 10s, 25s etc.

Goodness gracious, she's done it again!

8 years on, she's world champion once more - since Kristin Armstrong is still the Olympic champion, that means the 2008 double was repeated, even though both riders are now in their forties!

Ellen van Dijk (NED) and Katrin Garfoot (AUS; 36:46.36) both made the podium and finished within 10 seconds of Neben; the overall gap to fourth place (on this occasion, Olga Zabelinskaya (RUS)) was just slightly bigger than it was last year.

Barnes was 14th in the end, which is very respectable; Simmonds was 25th.

Simmond's has tweeted her TT bike set-up was UCI non-compliant. She ended up in racing in an unfamiliar position after quick pre-start adjustments.

The UCI decide on Yorkshire's bid for the 2019 World Championship in Doha tomorrow.

Tomorrow's men's ITT is just 25 miles and the flattest I can recall seeing. Only complications are the roundabouts: http://steephill.tv/2016/road-cyclin...profile-07.jpg

.
Main medal sessions going to be live on Eurosport next week. At this stage it's all about getting qualifying points for the Worlds, which will eventually lead forward to the next Olympic qualifying series.

Live coverage of the elite men's ITT begins at 1120.

Looks like it'll be between Rohan Dennis, Tony Martin and (perhaps) Tom Dumoulin for the stripes. Mind you, that's what I said last year, and look how that turned out...

Oh aye, Ryan Mullen (IRL) clocks a time of 46:04.74 at an average of 52km/h!

That might just be enough for the top 10 - which sounds incredible when you consider that 52km/h usually wins many a 40km ITT!

Stephen Cummings clearly hasn't fully recovered from that crash in the Giro della Toscana a few weeks ago. He's almost a minute behind Mullen at the first checkpoint.

Not the greatest ITT. Dull course and Martin in a massive lead.

Well, that was a pretty emphatic win for Tony Martin (GER) - he clocked 44:42.99 at an average of 53.671km/h!! I believe that's a WCh record, not to mention the fact he now shares the record of 4 elite rainbow jerseys with the only rider to boast a superior record in time trials (Fabian Cancellara, who also has 2 Olympic titles).

Defending champion Vasil Kiryienka (BLR; 45:28.04) produces a somewhat better than expected ride to claim silver and Jonathan Castroviejo (ESP; 45:53.90) goes one better than last year to get bronze. Maciej Bodnar (POL; 45:59.76) gets fourth and Ryan Mullen claims an excellent fifth place despite being young enough to contest the U23 race!

Dennis and Dumoulin were expecting much better than sixth (46:10.11) and 11th (46:44.50) respectively. Dowsett should have been in the top 10 but 12th (46:54.07) is still his best since 2012; Cummings could only manage 25th (47:31.52).

The top five competitors broke 52km/h, 14 broke 51km/h and 28 broke 50km/h.

Great news for Yorkshire, huge congratulations to everyone involved. Especially the fans who have made it all possible by turning out in millions for all the Tours so far. There'll be more people on the streets in a single village than will ever turn out for the this year's races.

The UCI revealed the hosts of no fewer than FIFTEEN world championships today.

One of them is Berlin, which will host the Track WCh in...2020. Apparently the post-1995 GBR/AUS duopoly on Olympic year editions has been broken; there are currently no hosts for 2018 or 2019.

Aigle (or to be more specific, the UCI's World Cycling Centre) has been awarded two champs - the 2018 & 2020 Junior Track WCh. It was, of course, this year's host as well.

Between the two of them, Cancellara and Martin have won 10 of the last 14 global championship individual time trials and claimed medals in 2 of the other 4.
