'Dunkirk' has started on ES........about 50K to go

Looks like a typical northern early season race.........rain, wind, cobbles, peloton split.......

Should be an exciting stage !

With the crowds healthy on stage 1 and 2, is the Womens Tour something that ITV4 might cover more when the IPL leaves for Sky?

Another very good stage in the women's tour today, obviously the riders don't have radios so tactically it's a lot looser than the big men's tours.

Shame the Women's Tour of GB isn't live anywhere. I wonder how the organisers and sponsors will determine if it's a success and commit to another next year (if they haven't offered some commitment already)?

I can see how it being on ITV4 benefits the sponsors with the adverts, so maybe it would struggle to get sponsorship on the BBC until after the first year where hopefully the public interest on the routes proves there's a desire for the race,

I'd happily pay to watch it live if Eurosport offered more than just the highlights.

As for the racing itself. Looks like they miss the strength the men have in the bigger teams. Armitstead saying it wasn't her team's responsibility to chase down the breakaway as the yellow jersey was in a different team, but both herself and Vos were battling at the front for intermediate points towards the overall win, when the stage win offers a bigger prize for overall less effort if their teams are chasing down the breaks efficiently.

Hope the weather is better for the rest of the race, and those making an effort to watch at the roadside enjoy it enough to come back with friends next year, and we have some live coverage next year after this year being judged a big success.

It took years before there was live coverage of the Men's Tour so this is a good start. But it's noticeable that it's already getting much bigger crowds than many of the well-established men's tours.

Disaster for Dan Martin hitting a raised manhole cover. Out of Giro?

Geez, just switched over to the Giro in time to see an awful crash for the Garmin team in the Team TT, they are down to 4 men so their time will be taken on one of the guys who crashed. Even worse, looks like Dan Martin's race is over.

Ah, got it wrong, they did managed to get 5 through the crash, but there's nothing for them to do now. I think the wounded will still have to get home inside the time limit though.

Catching some glimpses of Belfast's unique contributions to world folk art on the the gable ends, was wondering if we would see any.

I seem to remember some live coverage when it was called the Prudential Tour of Britain ?.......maybe about 10 years ago

I remember a circuit in central London on roads I know very well........around High Holborn, Chancery Lane..........and another Year a circuit up the Embankment and down the Strand

I think some of it was live on BBC but it might only have been the final stage in central london

Just looked this up before posting.......the PruTour only lasted 2 years 1998 and 1999........apart from those two years there was no Tour of Britain between 1995 and 2003

OPQS five seconds down (and BMC seven) on OGE. Had Cavendish ridden he had the opportunity for ten second win bonus or six for second, plus intermediates tomorrow. Kittel's Giant Shimano way off the pace in the TTT at a minute off OGE's time.

Rodriguez lost a minute and a half to his GC rivals Evans and Uran in lousy TTT performance.

I don't know a lot about cycling but team SKY raced great in the wet.

Looked like a nasty fall in that other team. Nightmare.

In the Women's Tour of GB, Laura Trott suffered suspected concussion after crashing and landing on her head, but may still start today.

Lizzie Armitstead missed out in the final sprint for the stage win but her team later reported she managed the 4th place with a puncture! Shame, without that she may have pushed Vos for the win and been closer to the top of the leaderboard with only two stages left. At 18 seconds off the lead she'll need a stage win to get into the top 3 now by the looks of things. Been looking good so far so it's certainly doable.

Giro Stage 2 was supposedly a straight-forward flat stage and guaranteed bunch sprint. The weather has other ideas, and it could become a significant GC stage especially with nervousness after yesterday's changeable conditions and crashes, and narrow coastal road on the return: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.87...ECZh48vxGg!2e0

ATOC presser. (Live coverage of stages end around midnight UK time starting tomorrow on BES). Main bits of interest are Wiggins at 1:07 and 1:28. Sagan is nonchalent throughout: http://www.amgentourofcalifornia.com...onference-live

Am I missing something, but even though Dan Martin was taken off to hospital without completing the TTT all the news on 5 Live and online last night was that he looked likely to miss the rest of the Giro.

Now this morning they are announcing on SSN that he will miss the rest of the race. Surely that was all confirmed about 3 minutes after the fall and there was no way in from then?

Incidentally, what happens if a team loses 5 riders on the TTT and only have 4 able to make it to the finish? Are they all eliminated or what time would the four be given?

good question

not sure !.........perhaps they would be given the 'elimination time limit time' ?

this is why they always hold these team time trials at the beginning whilst each team still has 9 riders.......to avoid this situation arising.....

yes........radio 5live don't understand cycling........or horse racing

I suspect there are other sports they don't understand but then neither do I.....so I don't know that they don't and they can bluff me

I was listening this morning and thought they were saying much the same about Laura Trott.......the impression I got from the report was that she was taken to hospital after the crash but would be starting today........they didn't make it clear that she'd finished the stage

If anyone is up early there's live coverage of the final stage of the Tour of Azherbaijan just starting on Eurosport

The stage ends with 6 laps in Baku, the capital.......

There's a British team in the race.......Rapha Condor JLT, but no World Tour teams

Must admit that I've had to look up Azherbaijan on Wiki to see where it is.......it's on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. The capital, Baku, is a city of some 2 million people and is busy preparing for the inaugural European Games, which is a continental version of the Olympics similar to the Asian Games and Pan-American Games

Very educational sport is cycling..........

Blimey........remember Jeremy Hunt, the British sprinter ?

He's now Directeur Sportif of one of the Azerbaijani teams.........it's a small world !

Looks like a nice City, Baku........very historic but with modern Dubai-style skyscrapers

Don't know where all the 2 million people are........the streets are empty.......

In the 2012 Giro, Phinney crashed heavily in a sprint and was hospitalised. Most believed he was out of the race because he did not complete the stage. He started the next day because the commisaires ruled that he had crossed the finish line (in an ambulance).

There probably was the option for Martin to restart. But, those who follow the sport could see it was almost certain his collar bone was broken from the way he was holding his arm.

Near miss and pre-start crash from Women's Tour:

Ooof, tough luck Ben Swift, great setup, but Kittel just the faster man.

Looked like Kittel was strung out in ninth position on the final bend - 350m out. I cannot see the other sprinters being given a better opportunity.

Kittel now looks to be unbeatable given normal luck.

Be interesting to see if Cav can give him a race in the Tour ........

This might be better for the broadcasting section, but Eurosport have had 5 different cycling tour stages on today. How have they dished out the commentators?
