Excellent win for Taylor Phinney in the TdCalifornia - put in a sneaky solo attack on the descent of a biggest climb of the day about 25km out and managed to hold off Cannondale and Orica for 12 secs. No change on the overall. Tomorrow night will be the decisive stage, lots more climbing.

Tour of California now racing through the kind of landscape we associate with tumbleweeds, abandoned graveyards with wooden crosses and the bleached skulls of longhorn cattle.

I think the riders will be collapsing when they've crossed the line as they did at Palm Springs last year.

The GPS has been all over the place for this Tour of California. Breakaway goes through the 5km marker and the on screen graphic says 5.7km to go.

Another terrific ride from Wiggo.......and Adam Yates

Wiggo must be riding himself into a TdF place......if you're being a tad cruel you'd say he looks like one of the best climbing domestiques around !..........

His apparent inability to accelerate means he's never going to win many mountain top finishes but boy can he plod on at a relentless pace

Yates does appear to have the ability to quicken and might be more likely to win mountain top stages but obviously it's too early to say until we see him over a couple of years and over some of the really big climbs, though last night was pretty long

ps..........just a reminder that it's an early start on the Giro

ES coverage starts at noon and it's the first of the proper mountain stages - should see the GC contenders coming to the fore

Long TV session today as we join the race with over 140K to go.......including 3 big climbs

I hope they're finished in time for the Cup Final........

Arredondo has been fantastic today on this stage. Hope he makes it all the way.

Cracking stage today, not the sort you get in the tour. Even upto 250m Rolland looked like he was home. Moreno was terasing water at 100m to go.

Interesting next 5 or 6 days, bit of everything, summit, rest, flat, TT and a medium mountain.

Oops.........premature celebration in California

The rider went over the line with arms in the air..........but there's still another lap to go......

Gotta laugh at the premature celebration. You just know the dude's never going to live it down from his teammates.

Sounds not exactly brilliant - I didn't hear any bell.

By the way he was pedalling after establishing an initial lead from the group, I was surprised Weening could stay away let alone win the sprint. OGE's successful Giro continues.

I was hoping Pozzovivo could get a bit more time back. I'm not a fan of Cadel Evans.

Bit disappointing that the peloton gave up.........they knocked 3 minutes off the lead in about 15K then just stopped riding and let the breakaway stay out again. It took the usual 'will they, won't they' excitement out of the last 15/20K

I'm sure a couple of teams could have caught them and gone for a stage win

Pozzovivo left it late. The steepest part was 7.5 to 4.0km from the line. He launched at the end of that section.

Hesjedal is 4:30 down on GC; all but a minute of that is down to the TTT in Belfast.

It looks like most of the GC contenders are watching each other and avoiding any time loss. The main thing is not to run down the reserves they need for the final week.

Final stage in California tonight with Wiggo still in the leaders jersey

Early start on TV.........scheduled to start at 6.00 pm on ES2, moving to ES1 at 9.30

As live coverage is scheduled for 5 hours they must be showing almost the whole stage........

Crikey! Thanks for posting about Tour of California. I wouldn't have tuned in until 10pm as normal. Yes, starts at 6pm today.

It would have been all over by then !

Radio Times is showing Live coverage until 11 pm but there's only 50K to go......they're going to have to go pretty slow......

It should be over by 8pm-ish

The Brits rule again. Cav for the stage win and Wiggo for the tour.

Slim margin between Cav and John Degenkolb yet again. That celebration just before the finish almost cost him the stage win.

Looks like the only possible barrier remaining between Wiggins and making the TdF Sky team is his relationship with Froome.

I wonder what they are going to do about that. Don't they positively dislike one another?

That should be fine. They won't be the only team going to a GT with two possible winners, you need to - 3 if you include Porte. Every chance one getting injured before or early on, look at Dan Martin, out within 15km, Purito gone and they have back ups, albeit not to that standard.

Theres some money to be made on this Giro. Not convinced Quintana is at his best, such a short price but I am not even sure he will get on the podium. Evans will go close but lose time in the 3rd week, Uran maybe but in a new team, unproven at this, Ulissi is going well but will likely lose time in the mountains. Rolland may win stages but lose time in between.

There will be some outsiders on the podium, Kelderman looks good. Majka possibly.

Might even get the white and pink jersey 1,2,3s being the same.

I suspect that is just a show for the benefit of the media, something to generate publicity for the team.
