Yes it was all completely bizarre. Particularly when you could lip-read Oxlade Chamberlaine admitting he was the culprit and pleading to be sent off. Why did the referee think a player (along with the keeper and other players) would do that ?
Perhaps he thought it was an "I'm Spartacus" moment.

They both rushed off pretty quickly, perhaps Jose was going to check Arsene's favourite wine had been opened and given time to breathe.

You should be critical of your own manager for not shaking other managers' hands on various occasions.

Great result today, Dave ,Matic and Oscar all had a great game. In fact all our players played well. Just a pity Torres couldn't get on the score sheet.

Bit of a mix up with the ref and who he sent of you could clearly see Ox-Chamberlin saying it was him....................he will be on a bit of gardening leave for the next few weeks

Matic and Luiz are now my favourite midfield pairing. Can only hope Jose feels the same.

edit: f**k sake, Fulham.

The law states..
A player will, however, be sent off if he intentionally prevents an obvious
goalscoring opportunity by using his hand. This punishment is not for the deliberate handball, but rather for unacceptable and unsporting behaviour that prevented a goal from being scored.
I think, given that the clear intention was to prevent a goal, 99% of referees would have given a red.”

Its quite simple, did the action prevent a goal being scored. The answer is no. If the referee is unable to see then he is not allowed to guess.

If he thought it was going in then he was incorrect and that will be held against him in my opinion in addition to the rollocking for sending off the wrong player.

I always have.
But to win a game and disappear
Bad example for younger football fans.
Win or lose always show respect.

The couple of games I've seen them play together it has certainly worked. But I wonder if Luiz would be happy committing himself to playing in that position long-term ?

Fulham..another one, 5-0. But I didn't expect much else. Liverpool also winning 5-3.
That defeat to Villa last week was costly, it looks like its going to the wire.

Hilarious stuff. Haven't laughed that much since I last watched Airplane. Thankyou very much.

Liverpool actually looking like genuine title contenders now.. the game against us could be very important.

Looking in a good spot though for our run in, not too many hard games and you would expect us to win the majority of our remaining games now.

City have some pretty hard fixtures, lets hope Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool take points off them. I think we can probably count out Arsenal for the title now too.

Also any news on Eto'o? he was actually coming into decent form recently, shame if hes out injured as we need him. Still better than Torres anyway.

The clue is in the the word opportunity, the same as when a foul is committed, the referee doesn't have to be convinced that a goal would have been scored, only that someone had an opportunity to score. Clearly in this case the player obviously thought he was denying a goal scoring opportunity, so why shouldn't the ref hold the same opinion.

Are you on a wind up?

I honestly have never read anything more ridiculous. A player dives and make a save with his hands in the penalty box and you don't think it's a red card?

Fulham, Cardiff and west ham are all rolling over and having their tummy tickled today, which is a shame after a great win against arsenal from us.

West ham are absolutely awful, they have gifted united two goals.

Looking at your remaining fixture list you lot have quite a few teams of the same standard. Will be interesting to see how Chelsea get on. Have to say you have got to be odds on favourites. Liverpool and City both have a few banana skins to negotiate!

Arsenal were beaten before they got a person sent off

Please provide the paragraph in Law 12 that says it is.

Deliberate handball to prevent a goal scoring opportunity is a red card - please show the proof that the ball wouldn't have gone in. Yes the footage looks like it would have gone wide but it's not conclusive

It's also unsporting behaviour in the extreme.
alanrollins
22-03-2014
It isn't for me to produce the footage but I am certain it was not going in anyway.

The referee has to be satisfied it would have gone in. I do not believe he could possibly have believed it would have done.

It could be argued the clear attempt wasn't denied anyway. Hazard got his shot in.

A yellow card offence according to the law whether you like it or not.
