It looks to me as if Eto'o will be similar to Torres, except he will play with a smile on his face..a welcome change I admit. I know it's early days, and he probably isn't fully match fit, but the old pace doesn't seem to be there and it was surprising how easily he was out-muscled when in possession.

Well, I'd assume Ba will start tonight, considering he was in the pre-match conference. Hope to see Azpil at RB as well.....not played for us yet despite being one of our better players last year.
Good to be back in the Champions League, but I wish I were more optimistic about where our season is heading. |

Yes, although Ivan has been good at RB it would be good to see Azpi again. Wonder if Marco van Ginkel will get a game?

Eto'o has looked okay for a first match. I still have high hopes for him though a debut goal might have calmed some nerves. Hope he starts tonight.

And he starts, plus a start for van Ginkel. Team looks good.
Cech, Ivanovic, Cole, Luiz, Lampard (capt), Oscar, Van Ginkel, Hazard, Willian, Cahill, Eto'o. |

Interesting lineup, will be interesting to see how Willian and Van Ginekl do. Etoo starting is also very telling, Why the hell we diddnt get rid of Torres ill never know.

I dont think thats true. im sure someone in spain would have taken a punt on him, he is still rated fairly ok over there, even Barca were rumoured to be interested a season ago.

Decent goal by Oscar but what a dull game. Would like to see Mata on in the 2nd half.

Indeed that half was very frustrating. We are controlling the game but we had pretty much 0 chances and created nothing. Lots of passing outside their box but coming to nothing again and again.
Frustrating when we have such talented attacking players but they just cant break through the defence. Barca manage it by having special players in Messi Xavi Iniesta, but we dont have them and we are struggling to break defences down right now. Hate to say it, but we lack a player who can create something out of nothing(i.e. Rooney/Ronaldo/Messi/Bale). Hazard is the closest we have but imo hes been very disappointing so far this season. He wastes way too much of the ball, id rather see Mata /KDB over him right now. Saying all that we are still winning the match with a great goal from Oscar. The 3 points is what matter but i am not too happy with the way we are playing just now. |

I thought Ballack hit the nail on the head, Eto'o and the three attacking midfielders are all playing the same type of game. It's not as if they're playing badly, they all look sharp enough, but there's no real goal threat. Great finish by Oscar though.

The players are too similar and are getting in each others way up front. I wonder if switching to a different system might help - i.e. 433. I would quite like to see Oscar further back in midfield with Willian/Hazard as proper wingers hugging the touchlines giving us width rather than cutting inside and going through the middle all the time. Jose knows this system very well, so i have no doubt he can get it to work. Ever since we have changed to 4231 it just hasnt worked as well as we would have liked, even if it is the flavour of the month tactical formation these days(Man City/Real/Barca all use it) |

Hazard plays better when Mata's on the pitch. They complement each other well.
Chelsea lack that 'killer' touch atm. It's frustrating to watch. We need another. |

This game should have been put to bed by now.
I don't mean to be the cynic here, but maybe this Mourinho return won't be having a 'fairytale' ending? It's still early days i guess, but i'm starting to have my doubts. |

I actually wasn't that fussed at them scoring those goals, it's what we deserved. It's only the 1st CL group game, the damage could have been a lot worse. In some ways i'd rather it happened now as hanging onto a 1-0 would have been papering over the cracks of an abysmal performance. Hopefully whatever idiot thought we needed to add Willian to our squad will have a good think about how that £30m could have been better spent.

I think the players are to blame here, The manager can only do so much but the players just diddnt perform tonight. Yes its the managers responsibility but i dont think Jose did too much wrong today.
