Despite being told via an online chat with Vodafone to ignore the data usage messages, it turned out I wan't on unlimited and was going over my monthly limit and being charged usury rates for the excess data.

Similar happened to us, but with TalkTalk. I had to phone my son on his mobile quite a lot when he was in hospital (he was very distressed quite often) so I racked up a huge bill every month for about six months. When I called them to say I couldn't pay it any more, that I'd have to be cut off because I had no money, they offered me an inclusive £5 per month package for calling favoured numbers which would drop my bill from £90 to £25. I said thank you and then went ballistic, asking why this had never been mentioned before, not once, when I'd asked them for help several times about how to keep my bill down, explaining why I needed to call the mobile. They ended up crediting me three months-worth back in the end, but I was so annoyed with them.
So, my Trivial Thing of the Day: TalkTalk.
