Jane Campion's mysterious new BBC drama Top of the Lake. Holly Hunter and Peter Mullan star alongside Elisabeth Moss, who plays the detective in charge of investigating the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl.

Anyone else going to give this a go?

Elizabeth Moss is actually the lead in this and as far removed from Mad Men you can get.

This has received brilliant reviews over in America where it's already aired and is meant to be seriously good!

Strange timeslot showing it on a Sat night which is a pisstake. Deserves a Monday night slot like The Fall. Good drama like this shouldn't be shoved to the weekends esp. on a Sat night.

Just read about it in the Radio Times. Looks like another cult goodie to keep The Returned fans happy until Sunday.

I suspect it's going to alienate/entrance the public in equal measure. One concern is that the BBC are showing 3 dramas at the same time, so the live audience will be split...

I was looking forward to this but in a preview the whole thing seemed to have been filmed through a green curtain, so difficult to tell the actors apart and so dark

It's only 6 episodes long so i think it reaches a proper conclusion by the end. Don't expect this to do well in the ratings though.

I felt like the BBC kept pushing this back. It was featured in an advert last year alongside Parade's End, Dancing on the Edge and The Hour 2 (all of which were screened months ago). Luckily, I have access to Netflix US, and Top of the Lake is on there so I gave up waiting. I definitely recommend (though I thought the conclusion was slightly disappointing). It's worth seeing for Elisabeth Moss' performance alone.

On Netflix, there was 7 episodes. I'm assuming episodes 6 and 7 are merged together.

Seeing it now.

Why are Jay Ryan and Peter Mullan using their own accents, yet Robyn Malcolm (from New Zealand, used to be Ellen Crozier in Shortland Street) is playing an American and Elizabeth Moss a Kiwi?

As much as I like Moss in Mad Men, why couldn't Jane Campion cast an Aussie/NZ actress like Jacqueline McKenzie or Judy Davis or even Robyn herself?

As much as I love Judy Davis and the other women you mentioned, aren't they, uh, a little too old for that role? She's supposed to be the same age as the guy that plays Johnno. Her accent is a little shaky at times (it changes in tone), but I think people care too much about silly pedantic things like that.

So what did people make of the first episode.?

I will watch next week, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I find Tui's father and two of his sons extremely easy to dislike at the moment. In fact, I haven't found anyone to like or be really interested in so far, not even the lead.

Love Peter Mullen! The accent thing was throwing me too. I'll watch again next time.

It was strange but I liked it, finally something decent to watch on a Saturday. Can't see it doing well though, I wouldn't be surprised the ratings are under a million by the end of the series, it isn't what you'd call viewer-friendly.

Beautifully filmed, intriguing story, strong (though weird in some cases) characters.

I predict there will be loads of posts on here saying "it's rubbish"!

The woman who had had the chimpanzee friend/boyfriend was exceptionally odd. I loved it when the bad dad said "enough - you're boring my tits off".

I will definitely be watching next week.

Hmm. bit disapointed but will give it another go next week.

Bit too much mumbling for me so I missed bits, or maybe I;ve been spoilt by subtitles on Les Revenants!

I wanted to like it, and it did look beautiful, but I just felt rather underwhelmed and ambivalent to it. I couldn't tell you one of the characters' names now, apart from Tui, and I didn't find myself particularly interested in any of them.

I did laugh at the woman who was recommending masturbation though!

Yes, I thought it was very mumbly too - I had to put the subtitles on. I thought it was me being tired and old.

Not sure what you mean by "supposed to be" - it is.

Seems like an odd mismash.
We've got straight up violent/odd families, small town and people who share a history.
Then we've got the odd mob up at paradise and their nutty leader who's as clueless and F'ed up as the rest of them.
Seems like there's a gang rape/assault in the mix too, that's going to resurface.
I'll be back to see what develops with Tui and the murder mostly, curious to see where it's going, not grabbed by it.
