That episode was brilliant, Kieron was so good that I can even overlook the Carmel/Jim/helmet scene

He should have no doubts whatsoever he played that to perfect. I loved the scenes with Pauline, it was exactly right. He didn't forgive her but they moved on. The story about the books and the reading really got to me. You could see how it mapped out his whole life with the stealing and so on.

I'm glad as well that Ste had like 70% of the screentime. The story had the time and conversations it needed.

Yes, and I love this director for not rushing things. He must have known how good Kieron is, because he let him do his job, and had the camera just point at his face for a lot of the time.
Memo to Best Actor nominee James: pauses can be the best thing about a scene, as long as you're not pausing instead of acting.
It gives Ste's relationship with Doug the context too - the neediness of it all because Pauline would never say she loved him.

I hope he doesn't, he really has nothing to doubt here. He was brilliant. His comment about wanting to read to his kids is what set me off. Even when he was still young It really is what he always wanted, a family of his own, to be a good parent, a parent that he always wanted as a kid.
