Melbourne and Stockholm were of course the host cities for the 1956 Olympiad, and Canada had a Summer games in 1976, though I agree any of the cities mentioned would stage a great games.

The decision on who will host the 2020 games is taken at the beginning of September, with Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo the only three candidates remaining.

Yeah, I guess there are a load of cities/countries (the most obvious being Paris) that have hosted an Olympics, but not a truly "modern" games as we would know them now.
As for 2020, there may only be 3 bids, but this is still one of the toughest decisions the IOC have had to make, all 3 have big downsides, & where they choose will have a huge impact on 2024 as well. I think they will go to Istanbul, not so much for 2020, but to leave the door open for Africa 2024. If it is Tokyo, we could see a huge fight between Paris, USA, & Africa. They won't go to Madrid & knock out stronger Euro cities for 2024.

Of cities that have previously hosted (albeit some time ago) I would love Paris to get it again (not too far to travel for us Brits) & I would also like Berlin to put to rest the ghosts of the 1936 games & the Munich Games also. Germany did a great job with the 2006 World Cup.

Of the cities that haven't hosted I would love New York, Boston or San Francisco in the USA. Not sure if these cities are too small but would love Budapest, Prague & Vienna also.

With populations of less than two million they may be small for Olympics.
But these cities be able to host (if it occurs) European Games
iAAF World Championships
European Athletiics etc?

Yeah, it would be good for Germany to get another chance, 1936 may have been of their own making, but 1972 wasn't their fault. I don't know where it would be, whether they would want to pick somewhere completely new. I actually think a Munich winter Games would be best for them.

In the short term: New York, Paris, Berlin, St Petersberg.
In the long term: Mumbai or New Delhi, KL, Bangkok or Jakarta, Cape Town

I think Paris in 2024 being the 2nd city to host the game 3 times, exactly 100 years after they last hosted the games would be great.

Berlin for the reason already mentioned, and New York.

Out of those bidding for 2020 Tokyo.

Was wonderinbg if their was a pattern to Games. but not sure.

1972 - Europe- Munich
1976 Americas - Montreal
1980 - Europe - Moscow
1984 Americas- Los Angeles
1988 - RoW Seoul
1992 - Europe - Barcalona
1996- Americas Atlanta
2000 - RoW - Sydney
2004 - Europe - Athens
2008 - RoW - Beijing
2012 - Europe - London
2016 - Americas (first South) - Rio
2020 - RoW? Tokyo (buit with Winter Games in South Korea is it too close?)
2024 - Europe - Paris 1924 Centennary? But France bidding for 2022 Winter Games. Would be 28 years since a North American country, or to keep distance from France, Munich or Scandanavia.

Should Americas have been 2008? But with Salt Lake 2002 and Vancouver 2010 was it to close? Though Vancouver of course would ahve been decided after Beijing, but did Canada bid for 2008?

Should we split the world, so one Olympics is Americas. then Europe, Africa/Oceania and final phase Asia? SoOlympoic arrive in your continent every 16 years?

Think you've answered your own question there. There isn't a strict pattern. I've said before that I'm certain the IOC look at the Summer & Winter Games as entirely different.

They clearly don't have successive Summer or Winter Games in the same Continent but beyond that there is no discernible pattern & nor should there be. Even the idiots who run FIFA realised after a bit that strict Continental rotation was deeply flawed.

So France needs to decide, does it want Paris 2024? If it does drop out of Winter Games bid...trouble is all the other Euopean bids.

I agree that Germany will be desperate for the Olympics to be held in their country again. They would do a good job hosting it. I would also like to see a city like Amsterdam maybe being given the chance. In regards to the United States it would have to be a close proximity city like New York, Chicago or Boston for me. Another, intriguing bid would be Cuba so it would be Havana. Paris will get the Olympics on their centenary of their last hosting, so 2024.

I think it won't make any difference if France get a winter Olympics with regards to 2024.

The key thing first of all with regards to a Paris 2024 bid, is who wins the 2020 bid first.

If a European City wins it (Mardid or Istanbul) I don't see how Paris will win a 2024 bid.

I think that if Istanbul or Madrid win 2020, then if South Africa wants 2024, they will get it. If they don't want it, then it should be Tokyo, or possibly Canada/USA. If Tokyo wins 2020, they will find it very hard to ignore Europe for 2024, so Paris/Berlin/Madrid. If Istanbul wins & they consider it to be an Asian games as well, then it will surely be Africa v Canada/USA. I think it will be Istanbul despite everything, as it is a new frontier, & is best for Africa's chances.

I honestly think it's SA or bust for Africa. Cairo might be able to host one day if Egypt can sort itself out.

After 7th September. I wonder if we will see expressions of interest for 2019 European Games?
It seems we are 687 days from the first games.

The Euro games aren't really for the likes of London or Paris, they'd be perfect for somewhere like Birmingham, Dublin or Cardiff. On the continent, I could see places like Gothenburg, Bratislava or Rotterdam taking an interest.

Stockholm would be a good choice and Paris as it would be near to me.

With 100,000's visitors has Stockholm got the infrastructure for The Olympics?
Paris is a better option,

New York has to be the most iconic city in the world not to have host the Summer Olympics. Paris and Berlin would be excellent choices too. On a very leftfield slant a couple of months ago on Games Bid forums they were discussing a Tehran Games if there was no Islamic regime in Iran.
