I often buy these because I like hot stuff. But my recent experience is scary.

I got a whole bag from Sainsbury and stuck them in the freezer for when I needed them to sprinkle on Pizza.

The first couple I defrosted in the microwave. One exploded and when I opened the door, everyone was coughing for a full ten minutes.

Thinking I'd learned my lesson I defrosted the next two in a glass of hot water. The first bit I swallowed was like no experience I've ever had. Didn't make my mouth hot but it felt like I'd lit a match in the back of my throat and my eardrums felt as if they were going to explode.

I think I might just eat them fresh or not at all in future!

Yikes! I wonder if freezing them makes them hotter, like drying them does?

I grew ghost chillies last year. I still have the chillies frozen but haven't got the courage to eat them.

Weird. Maybe you've inadvertently discovered the secret to violating the first two laws of thermodynamics using chillies.

I'd hazard a guess that more capsaicin was liberated due to ruptured cells? Gawd knows...

Did you cut them in half first? I did this once with some scotch bonnets I had bought from tescos . One of them caught fire, and sticking your head near the microwave was like being pepper sprayed.

It's recommended to prick chillis if you're going to blacken them on a naked flame. Maybe the same goes for nuking them.

Are you putting the chillies on before the pizza goes into the oven?
I wouldn't bother. They'll cook in the oven.

Even if you just finely dice them they'll naturally defrost in no time whatsoever.

Yes - my friends said it was like pepper spray. I didn't prick the ones I microwaved - but they tasted OK - it was the ones I defrosted in water that did for me.

I think I'll just defrost them naturally - or do what I used to and just keep them in the fridge (and end up throwing half of them away.)

No point in chucking them. If you don't freeze them then leave them out and they will dry.

My mate has a Moruga Scorpion at home. He can eat Scotch bonnets whole. He said he was going to make a simple stirfry with it.

Indeed I've found chilli seems to get hotter as it dries (I'm a wuss and can only have 1 medium red chilli in a stir fry/pizza or something and thats being kind )

I'd pay good money to sit and watch you eat one of my Bhut Jolokias whole.

They scare me, but i would love to grow them. So far though the scotch bonnet is the hottest I've grown.

I have quite a few stored away, but I did use one to make a chilli paste for my Texan chilli. It's the last time I ever do that and leave the seeds in! It brought on a heat that I've never experienced before, I love my chilli but these things brought me to my knees. My mates and I were all reduced to red, blubbering messes. It's OK, albeit a tad toasty, to start with, but then it starts to rise and it you think it's never going to stop. It's not a nice, yes I know this is going to be hot, heat like you get from a habaņero, it's like a volcano has just spat in your mouth.

If you try one in anything, keep milk and yoghurt to hand! You'll still be a weeping wreck, but at least it'll take some of the pain away!
