Since Bernie died I have found myself listening to alot of Nolans hits like

In the Mood For Dancing
Attention To Me
Don't Make Waves
Chemistry
Dragonfly
If It Takes Me All Night

I love them, they are absolutely fab!

I'm quite intrigued though as to what they were like in the late 70s early 80s when they were in the mainstream.

Have to say Anne and Maureen are my faves!

I grew up in the 70's and 80's and the nolans were to be avoided as your parents thought they were nice

I once sat on the same bog as The Nolans. In a recording studio in Wellingborough.

I liked

Don't Love Me Too Hard
Gotta Pull Myself Together
Who's Gonna Rock You

They were at their peak when I was 5-8 - liked them as a kid but they soon became Summertime Special/Panto when the hits dried up in '83 - shame cos Bernie had a great voice and the sisters work well together vocally and the slick dance routines (I mean that last comment!)
Maureen is by far the most beautiful though

they were naff... in a time when pop music was at its most diverse with strong new genres being discovered (punk, disco, rock, etc) the nolans were music for christian kids...

They were cheesy in a steps kind of way. It wasn't cool to like them if you were into *music*

I don't mind a sneaky listen to 'Chemistry' purely for nostalgic placement. Unofficially.

I've only ever heard I'm In The Mood For Dancing. It's never inspired me to check out any of their other songs, in all honesty.

I liked them and bought singles and albums by them. My favourite is "Attention To Me". They seem to be one of the many acts that some people claim to be uncool and not popular and yet sell more records than supposedly "cooler" and more popular acts. Another of the many 'family' acts that were common in the 70's that I loved were the Dooleys who also made pop hits such as "Love Of My Life", "Wanted", "The Chosen Few" etc...

I love this song! I had completely forgotten about it until your post. I don't follow current artists much so I can't think what a modern day equivalent collaboration would be.

Primal Scream and Haim were together at Glastonbury
but 30 Seconds to Mars and Little Mix sounds like a more interesting combination!

No me neither. I like it too, herd it years ago as a Quo fan and Whitesnake I knew about the Young and Moody band.

some people take music more seriously as an art form. this was certainly true 78-82 when the nolans were active. others dont have such a developed taste and just want a nice little pop song. the nolans provided nice little pop songs, but they didnt create anything new. fair play, it wasnt their job to be political.

but in that era there was so much new exciting music and fashions, youth culture was booming with new ideas, there was so much variety and excitement. this made the nolans look even more twee then they were. were they popular? well, releasing 9 singles only 3 graced the top ten... and they had 2 top ten albums out of 6... thats far less success then the saturdays!

Weren't they massive in Japan?

Coleen and Bernie have (had in respect to Bernie) successful tv careers. Linda, Maureen and Denise all do theatre work. Not too sure where Anne disappeared too although I know she released a book a few years back

well considering they had some pretty huge hits, there must've been more Christian kids around than we ever knew. Or maybe they were just a middle of the road pop group beloved of light entertainment TV shows that released some good tunes. And some of us were able to enjoy their best along with the likes of the Clash, Cabaret Voltaire or Fad Gadget or any other trendy acts you care to mention.

.... but they didnt have huge hits as ive already mentioned, 3 top tens of which 1 was a #3. of course it wasnt only christian kids who bought their music, but you get my drift, because id suggest most who bought their material didnt like you buy the clash etc.

From memory, they went from a completely light entertainment model - one example would be them singing When You Are A King on Morecambe and Wise circa 1971, to them taking control of their image and going into the disco-lite Tina Charles feel with IITMFD. and onwards.

It was this later incarnation that Ben Elton once alluded to having a sexual fantasy about in about 1982.

Then again, music wasn't promoted in the same way. Tracks were released THEN promoted - so we'd see a long slow climb up the charts to a natural apex, rather than "hype hype hype hype delay RELEASE- No 1 for one week- then disappear".

Also consider that they were up against a LOT of really good music at the time.
