Training might be the ultimate goal to get him into a position to keep in the house. Crate training for example.

It's hard to understand what the dogs job is. It's been with them for 10 years so really should be trained not to run off or chase animals.

Just to be clear we don't have farm animals....we live in the country and every single field is full of cattle around the area.
If he was roaming free at night an animal got hurt he would more then likely get the blame...we've been warned by a farmer that if he sees him in any of his fields he'll be shot on sight

I don't know anyone but I might actually bring him down the vet or groomers and get it done..his coat isnt that heavy but it will still help.
I took some advice from here with ice... I've been freezing bottles of water and butting the bottles sitting in his bucket of water to keep it cool...thought it was a longer way to keep it cold then ice cubes
Guys, give him a break. In Ireland dogs are mostly outside animals, due to it being more rural on average than England is.
Ice cubes in the water bowl, plenty of shade, and hose him down however much he hates it. It might also be an idea to clip his hair if he has a thick coat.

There's very few dogs around my town that are welcome indoors...its just the way it is around here.
All I was looking for was a few ideas to keep him happy in this weather....and I got a few. Thanks to all for the good suggestions..
Extra shade. Check.
Hose Down. Check
Lots of ice water. Check.
Coat Clipped. On the cards.
Also one I did today.....a sneaky bowl of ice-cream...he loved it !!

He has a long rope attached to his house (not weighed down with a metal chain)...he has quite a large house for a dog and lots of water.

Maybe if the OP had given a bit more information about the dog etc: most posters would have been more helpful.
The dog could have been a Chihuahua for all that we knew.

I never once said anything against you having your dog tied up did I? I just tried to get extra info from you to try to understand why your dog could be suffering from the heat.
You could try a water soaked towel on top of him/her if they do not like being sprayed.
I can see you care about your dog but at 10 years old it should be trained not to chase things, if only for it's own safety.
My puppy use to chase cars and it only took a month to stop her. But stopping her barking at the tv at anything that move .. that's never gonna happen

at least Gosh is trying to make it better for the dog when so many people don't, all this holier than thou crap is pointless. Its extremely hot today here in England not sure about Ireland so I hope your dog is doing ok

I'm surprised they recommend clipping them. Generally the coat acts as a barrier to the heat, the hairs helping the cooling process.

Trust me, the state he was in before he got it clipped, there is no question it was the right thing. Even indoors he was lying on the tiles panting and looking very sorry for himself. He's like a new dog now.

People have some very warped ideas in this section of the forum. Look at the thread about "Does you dog think they are a king or a queen". Like that is a good thing. People seem to think treating an animal as an animal is cruel.
Why do you tie him up in the heat, outside I assume. We keep our dog inside and he stays in the basket. We will take him for a proper walk in the evening when the weather gets a little cooler. I feel sorry for Huskies in this weather, fancy keeping a dog not genetically made for this climate in the UK! (too much fur)

Personally I think you'd be better finding a suitable alternative, like secure nighttime shelter. An animal on a chain or similar can become tangled easily if they are upset in anyway. Why not get suitable outdoor accommodation or kennel for him?
