I am actually gobsmacked at some of the replies......just wow.
My dog is very much part of my family, and has been for over 10 years... He is semi - trained and is quite obedient but he loves to explore by himself, and any chance he gets he will run off through the fields and forest for the day... He is well groomed, well fed, is played with constantly ... is brought on alot of walks....has a huge contained area to play in... and is secured at night so he doesn't get hurt. Yup it sounds like i'm pretty much the worst dog owner there ever was, how dare I secure my dog at night to keep him from being run over by a lorry or shot.... some of you people need to get a bloody grip. Also thanks to the few posters for sticking up for me.... Ceaser is a very large dog and he is not allowed in the house...its as simple as that. to say my dog is not part of the family because of that id absolutely f^cking ridiculous. Thats all I have to say Am curious, what breed is he? |

Goodness! I have visions of little Welsh dogs trained by the SAS and wearing camouflage...
![]() (If it's a breed I've never heard of, forgive my humour. )![]() this was my thought too. But from a google it looks like they are service dogs, no camouflage or parachuting. Far less exciting. |

What a cross! I like rotties, they can be so soft!
I've just hosed my dog down, she really doesn't like this hot weather either! Instead I've been bringing out a bucket of cold water and a cloth and just dabbing him on his nose, his neck etc... he seems to enjoy it alot actually, especially behind the ears...!

I know this isn't particularly pertinent to the original subject. But I have a black lab who loves swimming off our local beach but refuses to go into the garden if it is raining.
During the hot weather, I imagined he would have wanted to keep in the cool. Instead, he is spending a lot of time lying on the patio in the full sun! Of course I am making sure he has loads of cool water - but he really does seem to love sunbathing and I haven't noticed any excessive panting. |

So I live in the west of ireland, and my ten yo dog is chained up to his house at night time (lots of farm animals around)...I let him off every morning and tie him back up at night, but the last few days when i let him off he runs straight down to a tree in our garden and sits down in the little bit of shade we have for the day...
he literally doesnt move for like 9 hours (except to do his business and drink). He has 3 big buckets of fresh water left around for him everyday but i just feel really bad for him.... he's been quietly crying (you know what I mean) every now and then. Is there anything else I can do for him to make him feel better in this heat? I gave him as cold bath with the hose the other day but he HATES water ![]() I don't know if you have kids but an old wendy house or tent could be put down next to the tree he likes to sit under, To give him some more shade, Along with one of those big buckets of water you leave out for him |

Give him a good brush to get rid of any dead hair. What is he sleeping on? Vetbed is great all weather bedding.

I have a siberian husky and the last week or so has been quite horrible for him. We've trimmed him quite short to try and take some of the fur away and a paddling pool in the shade has been up constantly with fresh water every day.
Try to walk in the early morning and late evening and a damp cool towell afterwards will also help. Also during the day when he's not using it I fold his bedding up and put it in the freezer for a couple hours (we have a box one) so when he goes to sleep at night it's really cool. |
