Why is it that these so called smart TV's and blu ray players are never as smart as they say.

The Sony entertainment network doesn't have all catchup players and apps through all its devices especially on its TV's,

Why not?

BBC iplayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand 5,
Now TV, Sky Go,
Lovefilm, Netflix,
BBC SPORT

There are more too they should have but don't.

Most devices don't have the full set of what we now consider to be the standard players and on-demand apps. They should all work on all devices without having to have special versions written or tweaked, perhaps in the future!. The easiest option at the moment is use a PC and plug it into your TV to view these.

This is what YouView was supposed to cure - providing a standard interface to all services on all devices, but it seems to have been 'dumped' and become something completely different (and in particular no standard at all).

Are you saying that they don't have any of those listed or certain models don't have them all?

I'm sure when i was looking at blu ray players the other week many of the above were mentioned as being available.

I don't know what you mean. YouView hasn't been 'dumped'. It does provide all those services on a common interface and is now opening up to a lot more besides.

My "smart" Sony TV looks great (I bought it on appearance rather than features, I admit), but I have to say the smart aspects have never been without hassle of some kind. It rarely works. The catch-up services do work on it, but very slowly. It's no comparison to the Sky box it's attached to.

For the most part it's down to licensing between different manufacturers and the companies that supply the services.
And then in some cases its hardware restrictions.

Not on ANY TV's and not on ANY Freesat boxes, and on hardly ANY Freeview boxes either - hardly the 'common interface' as promised

No, it is a platform called YouView, which is a development of Freeview. It was never intended to be rolled out on Freeview or Freesat boxes. It is a platform in its own right. The day may come when it integrates completely with the other platforms and is built into TVs, but we will have to wait and see about that.

If you buy the retail version of the box, you get basic YouView (ie a Freeview+ HD PVR with the catch-up services built in and accessible directly from the EPG, which goes backwards as well as forwards). If you sign up to the BT or TalkTalk varieties, you get all that plus access to the additional services that those companies offer. All of this is delivered over an interface that is common to all YouView boxes.

No, it was supposed to be a standard interface across ALL devices, to solve the current ludicrous situation.

But presumably because of the extended delays on agreeing the final format everyone gave up on the idea, and it was 'taken up' as mostly a chargeable internet format instead.

In a conversation with a Sony dev a long while before YouViews launch, when asked about YouView coming to Sony devices he said "they wouldn't touch it with a barge pole" and gave reasons why. I can't remember the exact reasons, but they didnt think it was going anywhere at the time.
Not long after that Sugar came onboard.

Indeed - guess an example of design by committee which probably delayed it (too many cooks)

YV however is the best PVR I've used - I was using play tv on the ps3 2008-jan 2013 but youvuew matches the speed and reliability of using a high powered PC (ps3)

I found this video pretty good at showing what to expect from first boot to using youview for the first time it's defiantly the best freeview recorder pvr for 2013 and beyond IMO

Wow that's certainly some lengthy initial start up time
I don't suppose too many will be using the low power Eco mode with a 2 mins boot up everytime.
Don't know if there's been some improvement since that video was done, but the loading of on-demand seemed ever so slow as in comparison on Freesat <freetime> its pretty much instant.

For your requirements it appears to be so.
No doubt there will be fans of the Humax HDR-Fox-T2 who will point out all the things it can do ( especially with the custom firmware ) that the Youview box can't.

In my case the lack of recorded content streaming was the killer and I ended up with 2x HDR-FOX-T2's instead.
I can now record in either room and watch that content in either room whilst others record or watch their content.

That was the very first boot up - it takes approx 90 secs to boot up (vs 10-15secs in low Eco mode) - I can live with 90secs boot up time so I leave it on high Eco (uses 1w in standby vs 20w in low Eco mode) apart from the slow boot time you also loose the ability for remote record using the YV iOS app ( similar to sky's)

I just use iplayer / 40d and now tv - loading is quick enough but the biggest bummer is it doesn't remember the last episode u watched ie at the mo I'm going through shameless - when I go to 4od, it doesn't remember the last episode watched. And ou can spend sometime playing the wrong epiosde to see if uve seen it already. But the seamless integration with the epg and video playback quality is worth it.

That video was made in feb 2013 - ondemand speed has improved

I have a ps3 to fill the gap - youview is limited probably by ott broadcasters paranoid about recordings ending up on YouTube / dvd
