BT vision/Youview box
Hi,
I'm thinking of moving to BT vision for the football (amongst other things). I wondered what the hardware was like? Does it do all the standard things well? Record, pause live TV , etc? Are there different boxes available or are all BT vision boxes the same? Cheers |

BT Vision boxes are only Freeview SD PVR's.
The YouView boxes will get ITV HD, BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, BBC Red Button HD and C4 HD. The ITV Player, 4OD and Demand 5 are commercial free on BT Vision, but are the usual ad filled versions on YouView. |

I think that the confusion might stem from BT calling it's YouView service 'BT TV' rather than Vision. So my take on it is that BT Vision boxes do not record HD whilst BT TV (YouView) boxes do.
I think the name of the service was the only bit that wasn't confused at launch time, so BT decided to change the name in the interests of (in)consistency...

As I'm sure you know, they are also HD PVRs (HD and some additional subscription channels being received as IPTV).

Are the PSB HD channels via IPTV available to BB customers or only those with Infinity?
They *could* do linear HD on fast adsl+ broadband connections but I don't know their current policy on that. |

BT is in a mess with running two platforms with different content.
God knows how the average non-tech punter decides what route to take. And when they've made their decision, they may find the box they've chosen doesn't offer what they want. |

That I don't know, but I assume that the box is capable of receiving and recording them if an adsl+ broadband connection is fast enough - BT won't want to be box swapping when BB people upgrade to Infinity in the future.

I find it all a bit confusing. The BT website seems to suggest the 'extra' channels including the 4 PSB HD channels are only available with Infinity but they have said on (I think) their forum they have another technology that allows the extra channels on a compatible non-fibre line but what line speed is needed, or even where this new technology is available is not clear (to me anyway).
I find their own TV offer a bit baffling really. The new technology is a limited version of what's on offer via fibre http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/5...c-network.html i.e. Quote:
Later in 2013 the TV Connect service will expand to support lines that are still using WBC ADSL2+ services, but with a more limited channel selection and the increased possibility that a line may not be fast enough to reliably stream a channel.
so I think it may be still being trialled.

Heres the crack -
BT TV now comprises both BT Vision and BT YouView boxes. Its a users own personal circumstances that ultimately will dictate which box they end up with. On this point, I agree with both Derek and Mersey70. The situation is confusing, to say the least. The new IP channels are via (fibre) Infinity only. Including the HD ones (in stunning quality too). They are not atm available over ADSL. However, what BT are doing is offering Sky Sports to a limited amount of existing users only over ADSL areas/lines that are technically compliant to recieve the new services. They will not offer SS to new customers via this method. BT Vision - All the new services are now live. Well, the first batch anyway. SS can be recieved either over the air or, if on Infinity, via IP, and at a much higher quality than DTT too. YouView from BT - The new services haven't launched yet. But they will do shortly, in just a few weeks time. See, told you it was confusing...

I have worked out that canning my Eurosport Player sub means I will only be paying an extra £4 a month for a BT TV extra sub. Only thing is whether to do it now before the end of the month to get free HD or wait until the start of next year's bike racing season when my EP sub actually expires.
I am also figuring that I could save £7 a month by moving from the Unlimited to the 40GB Infinity package given my Youview box online usage will not then count. |

Apologies, mersey70, I meant BT Sport. SS is now Infinity only via BT. Oops.

I have spent hours trying to work out what I could and could not have with BT vision and it seems to depend on what box is chosen. However BT are apparently trying to get everything working on the youview box.
However as of right now it would seem that the extra channels, and BT sport will only be available via the Vision+ box, which I thought (and BT advised) means no HD. However reading the above is it correct to say that the box WILL do HD, just only via IPTV (i.e. no DTT HD tuner?) |

I think that's right. The Vision+ Box definitely does not have an HD DTT Tuner but customers (like Visionman) now have access to 4 PSB HD linear channels via Infinity IPTV.
I do however subscribe to SS 1&2 and ESPN (£20 a mth) and thats now also via Infinity IP too, and the picture quality is way above that available via Freeview and Sat SD. Further HD channels are coming, but the date for them and what they will be is unknown atm. |
