Do any of your cats retrieve things like a dog might?

So we recently got two cats - one is a siamese crossed with a maine coon, and the other is a full siamese. Both of them have toys they absolutely love (a little soft monkey and an even smaller toy (soft) fish), and if you throw them for them to chase, they'll go and grab them and bring them back for you to throw again. They sit quite patiently, and sometimes tap you on the arm if you forget to throw it again.

Just wondered if anyone else had noticed their cats doing this? I hear it's a siamese thing, because none of our long-haired cats have ever done it (or any of the other orientals we've had).

I have an MC boy who does it.

Both my cats (no breed / just domestic moggies) have a toy they like to play with. My eldest cat was obsessed by it's rag monkey - and the youngest runs around the house with her 'baby' (a stuffed rat) in her mouth, meowing as loud as she can for ages.

If I throw their favorite toys, they'll both run off and get it. Or at least run up & check that it's OK. Haha!

N'awwh! That is super super cute! Yeah, our youngest runs around with his fish meowing at the top of his lungs.

I've had a couple of cats who love to play fetch.

One of them. Charlie, little black female, does so with the plastic rings you can pull off the top of drinks bottles. If you don't notice that she's brought the ring back to you, She will give you a little tap with her paw

My MC used to do it quite regularly.

My deaf and brain damaged mog will also retrieve soft balls and will bring her favourite toys and put them on your lap when she wants to play!

One of my cats (a ragdoll) does this. She makes a muffled meow/ wail sound when she's carrying it so you know she's coming and then she'll drop it next to you. Throw it and she's go and fetch it back. It's super cute! She'll do this with any of her toys. I usually wake up with one of her toys by my bed from when she's tried her luck during the night!

One of ours does it - she's a wee black and white "Felix" look-a-like. Rolled up sweet papers or anything small and light sitting on the table (including USB pens) are knocked on the floor, chased round the room, then brought back and dropped in your lap. If not thrown again within 5 seconds, a swift claw in the face is administered.

All the Turkish Vans I have had have done it.

My cat, who is now almost 14 bless her, was born in a house where there were at least 3 dogs and about 5 other cats. She quickly learned that she could get attention & rewards by retrieving toys, and still does it to this day!!! Mind you, she prefers to chase scrunched-up receipts or sweet wrappers rather than toys. If I were to buy an actual cat toy, she wouldn't want it, typical fickle feline!

We used to have a cat that used to always bring the same stick in. Everytime t was thrown in the garden she would go and get it back. She did something similar with pine cones, plant bulbs etc but wasnt as interested in toys.

..Cat used to enjoy bringing in dead mice as some sort of offering, stopped that now though.

My cat does it but she is part Burmese and they have retrieval qualities I am told.

I have a Maine Coone. If I get a piece of paper and scrunch it he comes running from anywhere in the flat in anticipation of me throwing it so he can fetch it. If I throw it above his head he will jump about 3 feet in the air to bat it!

My cats have had all the toys in the world, and they turn their nose up at them. Same with treats, they'd rather a piece of chicken than any cat treats. But my boys, especially Pep, love being teased with pens. You drag a pen on the floor and he grabs it, he loves it. He's the same with sticks in the garden. Feather just looks at you stupid and gives you the worst look ever, he hates playing

Our much loved old cat used to love playing with drinking straws and would retrieve them, it was very cute. Sadly she died last year and neither of the two young cats we have now have caught on yet! One quite likes scrunched up pieces of paper and sometimes carries them off in her mouth to play elsewhere though which is amusing.

Me and my sister used to have a cat who fetched. Crisp bags folded into triangles. At first, we just threw them for him to bat about but he started bringing them back for you to throw again.

But he was smart about it. When he was bored he would go pick it up but then wander off and hide it somewhere rather than bringing it back to you.

When we moved out of the flat, we cleared the place out and found over a hundred crisp bag triangles secreted around the flat (in shoes, under furniture etc etc).

My late cat Florence used to collect elastic bands. My brother was trying to make a huge elastic band ball and used to get hundreds of bands from the postman, sometimes he'd drop a few and Florence would sit staring at them. We'd see her randomly walking about with one in her mouth, or rolling about playing with them, and we'd find piles of elastic bands she'd collected hidden behind the sofa or under the cupboard. Strange cat.

I'd say smart cat.

My current cat will eat elastic bands (and string, and ribbon) if she happens to find one. Not a good idea, obviously.

Stupid cat.
