It's one of her only albums that i listen to as a whole. It's dated somewhat but overall the voice is at it's best still has some way to go til it reaches it's peak on Daydream. Soem really great forgotten gems on there too Vanishing one of her best vocals, Prisoner one of my all time favorites and all the singles were picked perfectly. I remember buying it and it taking time to grow but overall great debut.

I disagree. Her voice on her debut album is just sensational. On Daydream, while it sounds heavenly, is actually damaged and has lost almost all of its richness. Her debut album is just a masterpiece.

I prefer her vocal on Daydream and to an extent Music Box as i feel there is a richness on those too that i find missing in her debut i like her lower register and on her debut i fell her voice isn't fully matured. That's not to criticise in my oppinion i just prefer albmus #3-5. It's part of my issue with Merry Christmas too there is a alck of restraint. Don'tgetme started on Emotions

Emotions is my favourite album. I prefer her voice on Mariah Carey/Emotions. However I'd say music box was was her vocal peak, she had vocal power. richness and fluidity.

I like the style of Emotions but overall not my favourite that for me is Daydream or Butterfly i can never quite decide

But agreed i love the restraint on Music Box there is very little over the top power vocals she keeps it stripped back for the most part. Music Box one of her all time best songs.

I don't even know why I said Emotions was my favourite album lol I think I was rushing to defend it as it's my second favourite album and the emotions era was when I first discovered Mariah.

No My favourite album is Butterfly

I'd rank her albums like this:

Butterfly
Emotions
TEOM
Mariah Carey
Memoirs of an imperfect angel
Music box
Daydream
E=mc*2
Glitter
Charmbracelet
Rainbow

I get you i will always love Emancipation as it was when i first got into her music as before that she was flopping hard and i missed her 90's heyday but i got the Mimi era at least For me persoanl favourites:

Butterfly
Daydream
EOM
Music Box
Mariah Carey
Emotions
E=mc2
Big gap as i feel these albums are just poor:

charmbracelt
Rainbow
Glitter
MOAIA

Mentions to Merry Christmas less said about MCIIY the better

Bit of an early 90s classic in my view. A bit dated now and the production is very much of its time but its still great.

I absolutely love there's got to be a way and all in your mind.

It's a shame when you hear how powerful her voice was back then compared to now.

Butterfly and her debut are the only Mariah albums I listen to regularly nowadays.

Honestly one of the best albums ever made in my eyes, every song is such a gem! I can't even pick a favourite as every song is so different and great in its own way. The production does sound a bit dated now but Mariah's voice really shines through that and it somehow manages to sound fresh still. I wish Sony would re release this with a digital remaster, its a successful album so I don't see why not! If you want to get into Mariah's music I say listen to this album, Daydream, Butterfly, Music Box, Emotions and The Emancipation of Mimi if you really what to know what she's all about. Avoid Charmbracelet and Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel at all costs!

Daydream
Butterfly
Charmbracelet
The Emancipation Of Mimi
Emotions
Glitter
Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel
Mariah Carey
Music Box
E=MC˛
Rainbow

Rainbow has many brilliant tracks however a couple of them are the worst of her career.

I think Rainbow is a good album but people rate it low because quality it wise just doesn't stand up to its predecessor Butterfly, which many people believe is Mariah's masterpiece album. It still managed to contain two number one singles and sold millions though so it done well at least .

Yes but in terms of legacy and people looking back on her work it's rarely mentioned next to albums like Butterfly, Daydream, And Music Box

And as for Rainbow asothers have mentioned in terms of quality it ranks quite low. After the rest of her 90's albums it was the moment she truly left behind her old sound and vocals and was the first album in a long decline until Mimi. Though there are a few decent songs peppered amongs the late 90's hip-hop fodder.

Love this album!

My faves- prisoner ,someday, I don't wanna cry

I loved Mariah but for me her music changed too much ,became more rnb with too much rapping in for me.

I stopped buying her albums after Charmbraclet (which ive listened to prob 3 times)

I actually quite liked Glitter, maybe a bit too much rapping in it but had some good tunes .

Its a shame that you stopped after Charmbracelet, its one of Mariah's worst albums. You should listen to The Emancipation of MIMI, if you love classic Mariah you'll love that album!

Agreed that's her only later album that stands up with her classic work. Stay The Night, We Belong Together, Mine Again, Circles, Shake It Off an so many more.
