Cheap Thrills

Early to mid-1990s is the best period of Mariah's career. "Someday" and "There's Got to Be a Way" are my two favourite songs of hers.

I think because it feels like a 'contract album', purely made for legal reasons whereas Butterfly had a lot of heart and soul in it.

Her debut's very good, but I can see why she's not fond of it because it's blatant how much the label interfered in trying to make her a second Whitney. No wonder Emotions scratched the surface of what she was really capable of.

I agree there Fashion her and en Marguilles seemed to have their own ideas and plans in place in walks Tommy and we get a good album but i do get the sense she wanted something different. I do love Emotions there are some great songs on there but again a lack of control.

Wouldn't it be the icing on the cake for her to work with Ben again, would go as far to say her ballads with him are better...Walter can produce them still of course

I'm not a huge fan of her debut tbh. I do like it, but I just find it a little dull when compared to her later work.

1993 - 97 was her best period musically imo. Music Box, Daydream and Butterfly are all brilliant in their own ways. I also feel Rainbow has an unfair reputation. There's some great songs on that album.

Exactly! I'm only 19 so I didn't become a fan until 2005 but I can imagine I would've started to lose interest after Charmbracelet had I been a fan at the time. TEOM was exactly what she needed at the time, an album full of flawless songs and vocals that resembles her earlier work whilst keeping elements of her updated sound, hence the reason it was so successful and a major comeback moment. It also gained her a lot of younger fans including myself .

That would be very interesting, but I'd still prefer her to work with Walter again. Its such a shame that Mariah cut him off, especially for which seems like a very petty reason. Obviously we don't know for sure how serious their fallout was but it always seemed petty to me.

Her 1990 debut album put Mariah Carey on the map and had continued success of string of albums and songs throughout the 90's.

I can't believe the hate for Charmbracelet, it is one of her very best, her vocal may not be as strong but every track is brilliant!

When I listen to the first album, I always get a bit confused about why people said that she 'went R&B' around the butterfly period. Plenty of the songs her debut have obvious influences of R&B and soul in them.

Tracks like Someday and Prisoner were not really that different to the new jack swing records that Bobby Brown and the like were doing at the time.

Vision of love is still my fave though - that was the debut single to end all debut singles. The problem with releasing a song like that as your first single is that you will never be able to measure up to it!

Couldn't agree more Diceroll it frustrates me when artists release that signature song too early, btw paulbax rumour has it she's definitely working with Walter on the album yet to be released .

Same here i'm 22 and it was the first album i got on my b'day And when looking back albums like Daydream, Butterfl, Music Box and her debut stood out immediately as they were really close to Miimi in terms of content and quality shame E=MC2 wasn't as good a follow up.

And Diceroll whilst i like Vison Of Love i think she surpassed it on numerous occasions. As a single its good but nothing special Vanishing for instance is far superior.

That rumour is always around though when she's recording, her fans basically try to think it into existence on forums but it never happens. I would be ecstatic if it did though.

Exactly, that album really made people interested in looking back over her past recordings and become fans. Strangely though Mariah's debut was the first album I actually bought of hers in 2005 even before TEOM. I loved all of her singles like We Belong Together, Shake It Off, Get Your Number etc. and went into to HMV intending to buy her latest album but ended up buying her debut as it was cheaper (I was only 11 and on a very short budget of pocket money ) and instantly fell in love with the album and her voice. I actually loved E=MC2 though, even though a lot of fans didn't like it, It brings back a lot of good memories for me.

Her debut has love takes time on it which will always be her best track.

All In Your Mind is... I don't think there's a word that does it justice. That final minute is simply insane.

I own all her albums and her standout for me is Music Box, followed by E=MC2. I do wish she would return to the sounds of her early stuff though. I'm not after a full album-worth, but a few songs in that vein on her next album would make me very happy.

Exactly like with Charmbracelet etc as it had so little impact there was a lot of interest outside die hard fans. i only really remember that era as my sister who was older got the Through The Rain single but it wasn't until i saw the WBT that i fell in love. Benn listening to her albums again mainly Daydream and Butterfly as they are so summery but will ahve to go back MC
