There's one thing that works for my dog to instantly cool her down and that's tepid sponging. It's easy to do and only requires some tepid water and a cloth, (or a couple of pieces of folded kitchen roll). In this weather my cold tap comes out pretty much tepid, so I fill a bowl and it's ready to go.

Dip the folded cloth or kitchen roll in water and loosely wring out. Then proceed to rub it over your beloved pet. I start with her head, wetting her snout, neck and behind her ears, re-wetting the cloth as I go. Then I do her tummy, down the inside of her legs and her paws.

I think this works better than a hose as some dogs don't like being sprayed and even if they're not bothered by water, it can be very messy. As dogs don't need to be completely wet for this to work, spraying with a hose is a bit of overkill and could in some case be counter productive.

I just repeat the procedure as and when required. My beautiful Daisy is now sleeping peacefully next to me having been panting just a short while ago. HTH someone.

We soak a towel in cold water then wring it out then wrap it round them cools them down nicely. Never been a fan of hosing them always worry the shock might harm them.

we do what you do molliepops, that or we flick his ball out of the paddling pool a few times, as he catches the ball, he gets splashed with water as well

(sounds awful really, but if he didn't like it, i doubt he'd happily walk back over and put his ball back in the pool to be thrown again!)

we also give him ice cubes and offer him refrigerated water
