The last time Asus had a problem was because they used a metal chassis. Seems a dumb move to err twice.

For wifi hotspots, you could sell intrusive or more appealing adverts. Thus shops could tout for business(those ads in free apps) as you walk by.

I don't think it's because of a metal construction because the Nexus & (2013) is mostly plastic.

I think it's software related.

I'm guessing turning that off to leave pure GPS will fix it.
= Software related to the wifi hotpot stuff. As it works fine for the majority then again it could be hotspot/network quirk.

It could be me with another 2+2 =5.

Yet the timing of the 'local ads' looks suspect.
On a positive note, as it is the GPS, the story may well lie low.
A case of 'any news might be good news' on this one?

huh? The whole wifi as GPS thing is nothing new. Its normally used to help GPS along. All thats changed is that it won't use as much battery. Its not used to automatically log you into networks as you pass by letting people spam your devices

http://hothardware.com/News/Android-...tion-Services/The good news is that when we can turn it off and still use the GPS. Apple have theirs on 100% of the time.Obviously people can only ad spam if Google or an app provide those better targeted ads.
It is all about big big money. Apple first set the minimum ad spend at $1,000,000. They then let customers spend $500,000 on iAds and now you can have an ad run for $100,000.
Yet Apple are the minnow !

BTW there is lots of misreporting in the GPS issue. Some people are describing they get a map fix and it disappears when they wander outside.
Obviously they could have lost the wifi location fix, never ever had the GPS location fix, nor maybe even never ever had the important recent cold start GPS location fix.

Yes, i got mine yesterday!

First thing that happens when you get it all set up is that it asks you to download a Google update which i suppose is to iron out all the problems its been having recently.

It's my first ever tablet so still getting used to it. So far it's pretty cool but still learning my way and finding my feet.

This is pretty standard. most new phones and tablets will immediately download an update.

Google Play still only seems to list the 2012 model. Is it not possible to pre-order the new one directly from Google yet?

Here's the UK sign-up page for it:

http://www.google.co.uk/nexus/7/

This will probably be a silly question but i've never used Gmail or had a Gmail account but using the Nexus7 it appears you have to sign up for an Gmail/Google account, is that right?

I don't really need another email account so don't understand why you have to do this?

You need a gmail account in order to use the play store, and it links to chrome. They just want all your info.

I think it's £199 for the 16gb one.

They've got rid of the stock browser, that's the only thing that might put me off getting one.

I got mine on Friday but only managed to charge and play around with it yesterday.

So far, so good apart from 2 problems which I'll mention in a moment. Its fast, the screen looks lovely, it plays games and runs apps without a flaw, especially the graphically intensive stuff so I am a very happy bunny.

But the problems... I've not encountered issues with GPS, multi-touch or WiFi so I'm happy there, but my problems are with Netflix and iPlayer.

Netflix refuses to connect even though the Network is connected and data is flowing and I can't find a solution. Says it is unable to connect to the Netflix service and the error code is 15001.

iPlayer "isn't compatible" so you can't download it. I don't know why it was OK with 4.3 on the 2012 Nexus 7 but not here, but it isn't available in the Play Store. The web version works, but means you can't watch live TV there unless I'm missing something.

Ebuyer wanted to charge me £10 extra for standard delivery to NI. While the rest of the UK gets it next day free. F#ck that, I'll wait. No one else charges extra to NI, where do they think it is?

Well, even though I only posted the above this morning, a lot has been fixed.

I force updated the new N7 this morning and then deleted and reinstalled Netflix and those problems are sorted.

iPlayer issue still stands, and even when trying to install it through the web store, its says that it isn't compatible with the old N7 so looks like the BBC need to do some updating. Luckily, the lovely people at XDA have APK files available to download which should also update through the Play Store when it becomes available, so my new N7 is now even better than the old one. Battery is lasting really well even though I've barely been off it today. Well impressed so far!!

It's not just a gmail account. it is your google account. used for all google services. photos, youtube, play, blogger, docs, calander, analytics, wallet, checkout, adsense, talk, google+, sketchup, custom search, groups, panoramio

etc.
