I live in Germany and currently have a sky box and card installed but no subscription. Therefore I have the basic Freeview channels but no record facility. Am I right in thinking I could just get a Freesat box and install it in place of the sky box and it will work? Will I also need a second input cable so I can record programmes?

You could Google or DuckDuckGo.com for available freesat channels.
Recording with only one cable is possible but you would miss out on much of the freesat PVR's recording functionality.
If you are spending over £200 on a PVR you should also get a second cable to make it more worthwhile.
Think about which regional programs you want & choose a postcode within that TV region. There are no restrictions on changing the postcode.

(1) Yes.
(2) For full function, yes.

Get the Humax 1000S.

He would probably be (financially) better off just getting the older Humax PVR model or something else rather than paying all that extra for <freetime> which AFAIK he won't be able to use in Germany. Humax Direct are still offering a Foxsat HDR 500GB Manager's Special for £129.

You're right, financially, but the older model would appear to be a dead end from a development viewpoint (unless you install the custom firmware). The 1000S should at least get further releases with new and improved facilities.
