So we have a laptop and it is essentially used as a desktop. Because of this it is plugged into the power and the battery has been removed.

Should I charge the battery and use the laptop with the battery in and unplugged from the mains every now and then? If so, how often?
Do I need to store the battery in a special way, or is it ok just in the cupboard?

Maybe try putting the battery in, charging it up then running on battery only about once a month or so. Let the battery run down then take it out and store it. As long as the cupboard doesn't get too hot or too cold it should be OK.

Batteries will self discharge over time. So don't be too surprised if it is dead when you do go to use it, not a fault just what batteries do.

Oh yes, when storing it make sure nothing metallic can touch the battery terminal and create a short. The result can be pretty spectacular and won't do the battery any good either!

Research has shown if you want to store a battery it's best to charge it up to around 40-50% before storing to best preserve the life of the battery.
