Elvis - first recorded 60 years ago
Today was the 60th anniversary of the first recording session by Elvis Presley, at Sun Studio in Memphis. Many other famous artists recorded there too.
A San Fransisco newspaper features a set of 14 photographs of the inside of Sun Studio, and more of Gracelands ( home of Elvis ). Even if you're only slightly interested in these pioneers of rock & roll from 60 years ago, the photos are worth looking at, and can be viewed at the following web page : http://blog.sfgate.com/travel/2013/0...icon-turns-60/ Regards, Phil |

Thanks for that.
I've been discovering a lot of music online lately from 60 (and more) years ago and loving it. I particularly love early Elvis and the Sun recordings. Fantastic stuff. Not that keen on Presley's sixties/seventies music though. |

This is probably the most famous photo from the Sun Studios, taken in 1956:

Jerry Lee Lewis is the only one out of those pictured that is still alive. Funnily enough most people predicted back then that he would have died first due to his excessive lifestyle and drug taking!

I always remember Rich Hall's remark about that picture of the The Million Dollar Quartet:-
"Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. What a line-up! In religious terms that's the equivalent of seeing Jesus, Buddha, Krishna and ... Carl Perkins". ![]()

I spent a week or so in Memphis last year and was able to go to Graceland, Sun Studios etc and was also able to see and really understand (probably for the first time) how the history of Elvis and what he did fitted in with the other musical traditions of Memphis (home of BB King, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Stax Records etc) and nearby areas such as Nashville.
For me it was only when I was able to see where Elvis came from, what he did in the context of the wider development of blues & country music and the effect that he went on to have on mainstream pop music that his overall impact all kinda made sense. And this is from someone who grew up pretty much hating his music because my brother played it all the time.
