Vodafone UK Results
First up with results this quarter is Vodafone UK.
Results are for 2013/14 Q1 (April-June 2013), the previous quarter and the same quarter one year ago. Note that Vodafone's year runs from April - March so 13/14 Q1 is Apr-Jun 2013, 12/13 Q4 is Jan-Mar 2013 and 12/13 Q1 is Apr-Jun 2013. The total service revenue figures now include Cable & Wireless for the latest quarter so I've also shown them excluding fixed line. Service revenue: £1521m (12/13 Q4: £1170m, 12/13 Q1: £1198m) Service revenue excluding fixed line: £1126m (12/13 Q4: £1157m, 12/13 Q1: £1186m) Mobile Customers (Total): 19.209m (12/13 Q4: 19.221m, 12/13 Q1: 19.067m) Mobile Customers (Prepaid): 8.010m (12/13 Q4: 8.116m, 12/13 Q1: 8.580m) Mobile Customers (Contract): 11.199m (12/13 Q4: 11.105m, 12/13 Q1: 10.487m) Smartphone penetration: 57.0% (12/13 Q4: 55.7%, 12/13 Q1: 46.5%) EE and O2 for same period to follow next week. Three (half year figures) the week after. |

Vodafone loosing customers. Mostly on Pay As You Go. The decline may increase with per minute charging. Although they have gained some contract customers it hasn't offset the decline. Whilst not exactly alarming figures they could do better.

Ouch Vodafone hasn't had much luck anywhere. I hope they can pick up there business interesting to see how 4G effects uk. Doesn't seem to have worked in Germany/Italy/Spain. Though in Germany they are second biggest network.

Vodafone needs to sort out their 3G network, certainly around here, it seems to be getting worse not better, and even the standard 2G signal seems to be iffy.
i was going to stay with vodafone, but may have a look for something else once contract is over. The problem is Orange is worse. |

The slide in mobile revenue is not new as you can see from previous results. Increase in Smartphone ownership probably has a lot to do with it as well as a reduction in mobile termination rates.

year on year they appear to have increased the total number of customers 19.209m Q1 2013/14 v 19.067m Q1 2012/13 with the number of contract customers more than off setting the reduction in PAYG. which is exactly what they are trying to do. i don't know what the ratio would be but they would be happy to lose more PAYG customers than they gained in contract. |

I'm not sure what numbers you are looking at but from those posted in the OP....
year on year they appear to have increased the total number of customers 19.209m Q1 2013/14 v 19.067m Q1 2012/13 with the number of contract customers more than off setting the reduction in PAYG. which is exactly what they are trying to do. i don't know what the ratio would be but they would be happy to lose more PAYG customers than they gained in contract. Results up to June 2013 19.209m Results up to March 2013 19.221m Results up to December 2012 19.067m That is a loss of 12,000 customers in 3 months. |

There's an industry wide drop in PAYG happening, which is fair enough, 12,000 customer loss in 3 months isn't much but it is a decline which is the wrong direction for the company.
Revenues are a struggle for the whole industry with termination rates slashed, European maximum price caps etc. All in all it's not a good set of results though, and a delayed 4G launch (was originally going to have been launched by now) will cost the company 1 quarter's potential 4G revenues. I think we're seeing the old incumbents struggle, those who historically had the advantage because they went to market decades ago and had the best frequencies etc. I imagine O2's results next week will be along the same lines, although their new upgrade anytime tariff thing might have helped them. When 3 report the 1/2 yearly results in a couple of weeks I think we'll see that the huge growth in customer numbers last year has slowed, hence the launch of 123 and £15 AYCE to try and reinvigorate growth again throughout this year. |

Agreed I think Three will be around 9.3 million. Vodafone at least hasn't lost all the new customers they made in the first 3 months this year. So it still more customers then they had last year.

The results up to June 2012 they had a Total of 19.167 Million customers. So in 12 months they have only added 42,000 customers. They can only hope the recent decline stops but I suspect they will lose more pay as you go customers due to per minute charging.

http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/...30june2012.pdf You are right about pay as you go although to a large extent this is something that is happening across the industry with a lot of prepaid to contract migration so the customers are not actually lost and the "new" contract customers are not actually new. Overall the results are so so. The UK remains very competitive which doesn't help them and there is some regulatory effect on revenue. However, if there is an EE 4G effect then it's hard to spot. Maybe we'll know more next week when EE report. We'll also have O2 next week and Three the following week. |

It's +142000 over the last year. I know it's a bit confusing for some but Voda's year runs April to March so the comparative I posted in my original post for 12/13Q1 (19067) is the corresponding quarter from a year ago (Q1 is the quarter ending June).
Total Mobile customers in the UK: June 2012: 19.067 Million June 2013: 19.209 Million This means they have added +142,000 customers in 1 year. http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/...30june2012.pdf http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/...30june2013.pdf Last edited by Everything Goes : 20-07-2013 at 23:34. Ok taking year on year directly from their financial results to avoid any confusion:
Total Mobile customers in the UK: June 2012: 19.167 Million June 2013: 19.221 Million This means they have added +54,000 customers in 1 year. http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/...30june2012.pdf http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/...30june2013.pdf |

Seems Vodafone aren't doing too bad. same situation as O2 really. Although smartphone penetration is growing. |

Just to add, on 4G, not exact numbers but Vodafone said they passed 200,000 customers on 4G early in November.
