Hello hope you are all enjoying this heatwave - here is my latest review, of Gossip's debut album Standing In The Way Of Control. Enjoy

Watching a music channel the other day, a song came on that I instantly recognised but hadn't heard for a while, entitled Heavy Cross, got me hooked onto a band that had never really excited me in the past - Gossip. With lead singer Beth Ditto's powerhouse vocals, Gossip had a huge top 5 UK hit with their debut track Standing In The Way Of Control, which doesn't appear to have aged at all. Its shouty, angsty chorus is the perfect anthemic song you'd want to see performed at festivals all over the world all over again. The aforementioned album goes down a similar route with pleasant results.

The album begins with Fire With Fire, a punk song with a catchy chorus that proves they can do more than SITWOC, a song that no doubt they are more recognised for than any other. Jealous Girls is another rousing number that follows Standing In The Way Of Control to a surprising fashion, again Ditto's vocals making the song that much more listenable and enjoyable.

Gossip prove on the album they can also do ballads; Coal To Diamonds is a slower affair, Ditto's vocals becoming more restrained and beautiful, a far contrast to other songs that soon follow on the album; Your Mangled Heart and Listen Up! revert back to the opening tracks' catchy nature, with Ditto's now trademark screeching (sometimes not in a good way) ensuring we pay attention, and 'listen up'. Keeping You Alive is another standout, while Holy Water sounds more archaic than the other songs, making it sound a little out of place in all honesty. Closing track Dark Lines is spooky and definitely a grower rather than a shower.

Overall, I am thrilled to have re-found my love for Gossip, especially this debut album - packed with great songs, with Ditto's recognisable vocals, the album is enjoyable to listen to and Gossip are worthy of the success they gained from this debut.

TOP 3 TRACKS = Standing In The Way Of Control, Listen Up!, Keeping You Alive

DUD = Holy Water

RELATED ACTS = Scissor Sisters, Tracy + The Plastics, Bikini Kill

OVERALL RATING = 7.5/10

Thanks for reading

This isn't their debut album, it's their third. But their breakthrough one.
