I think that the advertising campaigns behind The X Factor in recent years need improving. It's almost as if producers have sat back, and just relied on the popularity of the show to attract higher figures.

Britains Got Talent once did the same, and didn't really produce any advertising campaigns. When the show saw a considerable decrease in ratings, they upped their game and now produce high quality trailers to advertise the show.

I think The X Factor should really do this too, and film trailers instead of just showing clips of the auditions. Any ideas on this?

It would be good to have one based on Sharon's return, maybe a comical advert like what BGT now use.

A comical advert would work very well, in addition to showing clips of the auditions. The "Who's Time is Now" adverts last year didn't help it at all.

You're right, they were awful. Obviously, The X Factor is undeniably a big show and so promotion can't be blamed entirely for low ratings, but I think it can definitely create some hype around a series which could potentially lead to an increase in ratings.

A comical advert focused on Sharon coming back would be fantastic. They could maybe show Sharon walking and as she walks, havoc takes place. They could show Louis getting thrown water over him, and fun things like that

Its the tenth anniversary- maybe they could have a nostalgic advert like with Saturday Night Takeaway where they can show clips of the shows most memorable moments. Thing is, it's not just down to the advertising campaign. BGT had that, and seemingly it can rate well on its own for the auditions and final but falls apart come the semi-finals and this comes down to a lack of momentum and hype around the acts - I can't seem to put my finger on the reason for that. It has the right panel, occasional banter (even if more of it goes on on More Talent) and some great talent, but the atmosphere in the studio isn't as great as it was in the first three series.

X Factor itself lacked the event TV feel but with a good crop of contestants, a new set (which should give it a fresher feel), interesting themes and banter between the judges, they should manage to bring it back.

An advert showing Sharron in action as a judge would be a great idea to bring back some of the viewers.

I think last year's adverts had the nostalgic feel and so I hope they do something different. I love the idea of a comical advert showing the havoc caused by Sharon

But last years adverts focused on the contestants' journey. That said, I think a comical advert would be the best idea.

They did yeah, but they were also quite nostalgic in terms of revisiting old contestants. I think a comical advert would show that the series is going to be entertaining and fun, so it's perfect.

Just hope that the producers realise that it did work for BGT, and that it's the best way for them to gain people's interest in the show again.

I hope they do but I think it's doubtful. They've (Presenters and Judges) already had their promotional photographs taken a couple of weeks ago, and so if they were going to film specifically for an advert, you'd think they would have worked on it then? But there's no word yet. We'll see.

If they don't do a comical advert, then another POV trailer would be great. I really like this advert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n07xE95DFE

They could do an advert similar to the one above, if they don't want The X Factor to be branded as comical.

They really need to use the return of Sharon as a focal point of the ad campaign. The first time they didn't make a big deal of a new judge was with Nicole last year, who ironically became one of the best ever recieved judges. The 'whose time is it now' felt more like looking back rather than forward, which is something they need to do to an extent this year with Sharon, but put the emphasis on the future and the new format.

If they go for the comical advert approach, they could have Louis waking up from nightmares of having water etc thrown over him, to wake up to be faced with Sharon back on the panel.

I WOULD LOVE THIS!

Imagine Louis waking up and having Sharon at his bedside 'It's okay loulou' and laughs. Then they show audition clips. That would be amazing.

Or have Louis waking up from a nightmare and finding Sharon at his right, Nicole as his left talking about balls and Gary at the bottom of the bed talking with his irritatingly slow accent.

At the very beginning of this video you can see they've already made like a mini trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkSQgRbySQc

I guess a different one will be used for the TV adverts though.

I think he's actually been sat where he was last year. Everytime I've seen any pictures etc this year, its always Nicole in the head judges chair

How about this, Louis is having dreams of the past 10 years of X Factor, till the end were it turns into a nightmare with Sharon throwing water over him, he wakes up at the closed audition room sees Gary & Nicole smiling at him, he happy thinking it was just a dream, then sees Sharon doing an evil vicious laugh, then cuts to X Factor logo & start details

I want to see this one:

The audience with Dermot screams: It's back!!
Then Nicole: It's back!
Gary: It's back!!
Louis: It's back!

THEN... still frame causing a climax...

Sharon: I'M BACK!

(X Factor Logo) + Details

This sounds alright, and I do love the dramatic trailers the show uses, but I think a comical advert would just work far better in terms of attracting bigger audiences. It's a saturday night show, people want fun and entertainment, and a dramatic trailer doesn't really show that. I agree with you that Sharon needs to be the focus of the advert undoubtedly.
