Sony HXD890 no video
My HXD890 appears to have melted in the heat, it has been recording things (which I can play back) and the tuner is working (I did a full retune to try and fix it), however it isn't displaying any video from the tuner - and quickly goes to a blank screen when accessing the EPG.
I haven't tried a full factory reset yet (I'm reluctant to destroy my settings), just wondered if anybody had any ideas or has seen this before? |

How spooky is that? I'm searching the web tonight because ours has done the same thing! Maybe it's something that happens on the 19th July!
Hope we get a solution. |

Mine's done exactly the same too. It was working fine all day until 17:30, but had lost all video when it should have recorded something at 19:00.
I'd had one or two problems with the EPG recently, and after seeing this thread and reading other forums, I decided that a firmware update (from 1.15 to 1.24) might do the trick. All was going well until the final step, which should have taken 6 minutes. An hour later it's still "stuck" and the instructions say not to press any buttons or disconnect the power - what to do....? |

I think this is the same box my dad has. He rang me last night to say he's lost all his channels, they just show up as a black screen.
Also when he presses channel + or - the channels move in a random order. He has 2 of these boxes and they are both doing the same thing. Anyones working ok yet? |

As a follow-up to the above, after leaving it overnight(!) it hadn't moved on, so I disconnected the power.
Good news: recorder powers up and is running version 1.24 OK. Bad news: still no output, apart from an occasional few seconds, on any channel. Seems too much of a coincidence to be a hardware fault. Any clues? |

See http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-r...-freeview.html
My RDR-HXD970 failed in the same way last night. Is now showing "UPDATE" on display. |

Could it be the overnight EPG update is failing?

I'd just like to say thanks for the info, we've just started getting calls from customers
![]() No way to contact Sony on a Saturday (if at all now?), so I tried ringing Arqiva, who aren't aware of any changes in the broadcast chain. |

I have the same problem in Belfast with my RDR-HXD870. Have emailed Sony and left a message on Sonys Facebook page. Apparently equipment only fails during office hours..

Bizarre.
Mine has also been stuck on UPDATE all morning - usually whilst it is updating, merely switching it on cancels it, but that's not working so I guess it has frozen. The EPG is blank and populates after a second, and then disappears. It is still there though, as the device appears to be frozen, but pressing Guide again (which causes it to come out of the EPG) allows to switch through channels again, or access the other functions. As noted elsewhere the EPG looks different (different colours certainly; it doesn't stay on screen long enough to check for other differences, and I can't remember exactly what it usually looks like anyway). This does look like either an SI-related problem, or a date/time overflow bug in the firmware. Not sure why that would stop the video from displaying though. |

It would appear that going to the Digital tuner/replace channel
menu and picking any country other than UK will give you your picture back, although you have to wait up to 5 minutes at the resetting digital clock window. Unfortunately, the EPG is non-functional. Mike. |

Sony RDR-HXD870 etc recorders
I'm in Doncaster. I've four Sony HXD870 machines and two friends each have two - they are all now incapable of receiving Freeview channels. Title list and DVD playback remain ok. On Thursday night a couple of timer settings failed to record and then on Friday evening three machines packed in leaving me recording Salt on Film 4 on one remaining machine. After about 40 mins the TV screen went blank and the Film4 broadcast stopped being received. My machines are on different software versions (120, 125 and 126), all are running on Hardware version 435 and some have auto-update of software set to YES and on others it is set to NO - this setting appears to have had no impact on the EPG or software versions, none of the EPGs work and software version number remains unchanged. Either a major screw-up by Sony or the supplier of the EPG and its data or, more worryingly, a deliberate act to stop these Sony machines from functioning - to my mind the Sonys are far superior to current machines from Sony and Panasonic and offer much that I imagine the international media companies would rather we didn't have access to. Maybe just my paranoia. Maybe the update company (who/what is it?), have downloaded to us the wrong EPG software together with the new EPG data. Has anyone tried updating the Sonys via a download from Sony, burnt to disc?
Steve. |

Similar problems with my HXD890 - stuck on update so switched machine off at mains and switched on again. No picture on any Freeview channels. Interestingly the sound has remained on Saorview (RTE DTT) channels as before. Have gone through easy setup but still no picture or sound on Freeview channels. Edit: Went through Easy setup a second time and changed country to Deutsch - channels came back with picture but EPG empty. Did manage to manually timer record from BBC1.

6 items reported to us today in store. Last caller said that he had been informed (by someone in the know about Sony) that Sony have not released a software update this week and the source of the fault is being traced.
Might be that a rogue or test transmission has been set live by someone in error and has caused the issue. I look forward to finding out what happened! |

Just to add that my HXD890 is in the "dead" state, and has been since yesterday. I've power cycled at the mains, but it just goes back to the same state ("UPDATE" shown on the front-panel, no response to any buttons, no output to TV).
Hope it's going to be possible to recover the recordings from the HDD

The more recent Samsung made ones (RDR-DC100 series) are not affected, and were the last DVD recorders sold by Sony, finishing a couple of years ago now. Either it's something changed in the EPG broadcast data that they can't cope with?, or it's a bug in the software, or even a licence that's run out perhaps?. Be interesting to see what happens, and how quickly. |

Sony RDR-HXD870 etc recorders new front display
Should be no worries about previously recorded material, should all appear on the Title List and be playable.
One thing I noticed and forgot to mention some of my Sonys sstarted to display the Time AND date of the front panel e.g. "03:30 20/07" They have previously only displayed the Time and Channel number. Steve |
