If you can switch your box on - go through Easy setup, change country for auto tune from UK to another on the menu and channels with picture should return. You can then manually record as I did this successfully with golf on BBC1. EPG is empty though.

My box is totally unresponsive. Can't get anything out of it at all at the moment
![]() Initially it came up with "UPDATE" again, and wouldn't respond, but then a few minutes later it started responding again and I now have access to my recordings ![]() Seems as long as the aerial is disconnected the machine is happy. |

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this forum so far. My box developed similar faults. I thought the electronics in the tuner had died and I was on the point of dumping the box. I tried to report this to Sony via the link given earlier in the forum but having typed it all in I was greeted with the message that the facility is not available at this time, it is down for maintenance.
Luckily I saved a copy of what I tried to send and present it here in the hope it is useful to others and perhaps even to Sony if any of their staff read this forum: Between 13:45 and 18:00 UK BST time on Friday 19/7/2013, my Sony RDR-HXD995 developed a fault whereby a black screen has replaced the Freeview picture (from both my local transmitters - Crystal Palace and Bluebell Hill). Existing programmes already stored on the hard disk play fine and the rest of the menu system works fine - except when I check Signal Strength I get strength of 95% and quality 100% as usual then the screen goes black as it attempts to display what it being broadcast on the LCN. If I go into Easy Setup to rescan the digital channels, the unit finds all the channels I had before, places them into the channel list but they all display a black screen when I try to view them. To make matters worse, my box was stuck in UPDATE all night. Pressing the power on button did nothing - it wouldn't come out of standby. I powered it off this morning by unplugging it, left it a few minutes, powered it back up and it got stuck in UPDATE again. But at least the power button brought it out of standby. In desperation, I did a reset to factory defaults and set the box up again in the same way as I did when it was first delivered. Again, all the channels were found but a black screen resulted when trying to display what they were broadcasting. Another couple of changes have occurred as well, as though an over the air update has occurred yet my box's software and hardware levels are showing the same as before: 1. Instead of referring to SYSTEM MENU in the signal strength display, it refers to HOME MENU. 2. The front panel has started displaying the date and time, it only used to display the time. My box's levels are (still) as follows: Hardware Version: 455. Software Version: 115. Thanks to the people in this and the AVForums, by following the tips about setting the country to France, I too now have Freeview pictures and the ability to set manual timers in the absence of the EPG. Many thanks. Last edited by bworth : 20-07-2013 at 17:39. Reason: Add extra info |

My Sony HXD 970 (In London) doing exactly the same thing, discovered it yesterday when I went to set up something to record, went to EPG (which had a slightly different colour tone than normal_and then 5 seconds later went out of it to blank screen. Now after multiple resets stuck on update as others and giving a blank screen in place of channels.
Seems to be doing exactly the same as others. |

Sony RDR-HXD890 "update"
I've came down this mornign to use my Sony RDR-HXD890 to find it wouldn't bootup and the word "Update" on the display. I assumed it was doing a firmware update (later to find Update meant an EPG update). After a few hours it was still displaying Update, it didn't respond to anything from the remote control or buttons on the front of the machine so I cycled the power. Since then it doesn't tune into any channels so tried a full reset. Found all channels OK, plays pre-recorded programs. Doesn't list displaying the EPG (starts populating it but the screen goes blank). Doesn't tune into any channels (blank screen). Have tried a power cycle again - still no joy, any ideas? It is using firmware 1.15

Must be a bug... Mine is doing the same thing - EPG blank and screen goes blank when trying to populate, finds all channels with factory reset and scan, blank screen on TV channels except a millisecond of sound. Previous recordings working fine.
Using FW 1.15 I suspected a change as the EPG did look different from what I could remember. Although can watch previous recordings OK I manage to get a split second of sound when changing chanels. Signal quality 95% - Emley moor transmitter. Last edited by amtrakuk : 20-07-2013 at 22:10. Reason: Adding extra info |

another one for the list
HXD870 with continuous "Update"
It started last night when I pressed Guide and a different EPG partially appeared then black screen. I only came to the forum to see what you guys would recommend as a replacement as I thought the capacitors had blown. Saved me a few shillings assuming there is a fix. Oxford transmitter not sure which version it's on. |

Have rescanned using France as the country and works fine, am going to try Guide+ (the non-freeview one) to see if that gives an EPG while this bug is sorted.
I understand Guide+ only populates overnight |

I've had the same on my DVD recorder.
It lost all channels last night and it's still saying "update" tonight. |

Seems to be the case all over the country. Also stuck on "update" here from the Redruth (Four Lanes) transmitter here in Cornwall.
How the hell can this happen? |

I have emailed Sony support Quoting this website URL informing them it appears all parts of the country are affected as of yesterday with various firmware versions. Hopefully this will be sorted ASAP - maybe a firmware update. Whatever seems to have happened I suspect on the Transmitter side as seems a bit odd the boxes are dropping like flies all over the country as of yesterday.

Not sure if 4G is something to do with it - posted Yesterday on the freeview website;
http://www.freeview.co.uk/articles/h...erference.html Tried phoning Freeview to see if there has been any alterations in the last 48 hours but they no longer operate a call centre - Web only |

+1 on the "my dad just called me and..." list.
RDR-HXD890 EPG failure UPDATE on display Now will not tune etc Basically same time and symptoms as everyone else. Has to be a fault in something being (or not being) broadcast in my view. |

I'm pretty sure the problem is caused by the CRIDs for all programmes on Sky's channels being malformed (no data portion, due to a missing '/' separator character). Give Sony a break - it's not their fault, although arguably their software shouldn't fallover even if the EIT data is corrupt. Go and complain to Sky, or whoever maintains their EIT data
. Besides, it is not just affecting Sony - Vestel-made PVRs are also having trouble.

Oddly enough I have reconnected my Virgin Media TiVo (cable) and updated the program guide and all the Freeview channel guides are "To be announced". Channels that are not available on Freeview eg. Sky1 have a populated EPG. I have rebooted the TiVo box and redownloaded the EPG with the same result.
I have also phoned a friend who has a Humax (single Tuner) and a Sony (not sure what model) which are both working fine (including the EPG) |

Maybe linked
As per Virgin Media website;
There is a fault disruption. You might find that you cannot see some miniguide information for certain channels on your Virgin TV or TiVoŽ service at the moment. Fault reference: F002578146 |

Like others here I returned home on Friday to find no channels were being displayed. I tried various things to fix it including rescanning, resetting to factory defaults, and reapplying the firmware to no avail.
I came here to find the selecting France workaround, but this left me with no EPG. I then decided to try other countries, but there was no real difference other than Germany and Italy not deleting duplicate channels. I have however discovered a way to get the EPG back: TRY THIS FIRST. 1. Go to System Menu -> Initial Setup -> Digital Tuner ->Replace Channels -> Next Screen. 2. Select Belgium (or anything other than UK) as the country. 3. Select Return once progress bar reaches 1% or higher. 4. Go to Basic -> EPG Type Select. 5. Select Guide (digital) if not already set. 6. Press System Menu and your channels and EPG should be back after changing channels. TRY THIS AS A LAST RESORT. 1. Remove any disc from the recorder and make a note of your timer settings. 2. Press and hold the stop button on the recorder. 3. While hold stop press the power button on the recorder. 4. The recorder will restore factory settings (recordings won't be erased) and power down. 5. Press power to start easy setup. 6. Select English as the language, and auto scan using UK as the country. 7. Set country selection to UK, and continue until you complete easy setup. 8. Go to System Menu -> Initial Setup -> Digital Tuner ->Replace Channels -> Next Screen. 9. Select Belgium (or anything other than UK) as the country. 10. Select Return once progress bar reaches 1% or higher. 11. Go to Basic -> EPG Type Select. 12. Select Guide (digital) if not already set. 13. Press System Menu and your channels and EPG should be back after changing channels. Regards, John. |
