I must admit that I do not know too much about him, but I do remember watching a couple of his videos on MTV2 when I first got digital TV.I thought to myself that he is really talented and that his music videos are very innovative. The videos I watched were 'Loser' and 'Sexx Laws.' I also saw another one that was filmed in black and white and he is on a beach with a telescope. They used to show his videos frequently in the early days of MTV2 during the late nineties and early noughties.

http://www.beck.com/recordclub/

he has new music out now, after in the past few years releasing an album in the format of a songbook that you had to play the music yourself, and he did cover versions of a few albums like kick by inxs and the velvet undergrounds first album, which you can find at the link above on this official website. scroll to the bottom for more albums.

he's fantastic live so if you get a chance, don't miss him. i've seen him a few times including his low key solo accoustic tour that just had him playing without a band and telling stories between songs like unplugged

Beck has two turntables and a microphone... and a strong belief in Xenu.

Lot of the rock media at the time (mid-late 90s) were talking about Beck as the future of...almost everything - Select magazine, NME, Melody Maker etc - albums of the year, coolest person on the planet...

Didn't really turn out that way?

I remember he was nominated for a Brit award for what seemed like 10 years solid, despite most people never having heard one of his records!

Selling it has been a problem.

He hasn't been on the rader in the 00s in anyway comparable to that mid/late 90s period....people seemed to be waiting impatiently for whatever he was doing next...almost in a 70s Bowie or 80s Prince way (he's nowhere near either at their peak IMO...and importantly never was at their commercial level)

Maybe that's the way he likes and will continue to do so...but the 'it boy' status seems a long time ago.

Scientology? Didn't know that.

Ah well. 'Odelay' is really good, but 'Mutations' IMHO is a beautiful work. Highly recommended. He slipped off my radar after that, tbh.

I know of Beck. I remember there was an episode based on them on Futurama when Bender went on tour with them.

Has it though? Most of his albums have hit the top 20-25 in the UK, while his last 4 have all made the Billboard top 10 in his homeland. Ok he's not rivalling Adele for sales, but he doesn't really seem to be the kind of artist who's striving for enormous sales figures, to be honest. He basically does whatever he wants and has still managed to maintain a decent fanbase.

only on a Digital Spy music forum is someone's commercial merits considered more important than their artistic peak or ability

Well it's relevant enough in the sense that he could never claim to be a cultural icon in the way the former pair could. Commercial and critical success...Beck really only managed the latter on a widespread level

well Beck never claimed to be an icon. Although if you speak to folk who were around in 94 Loser could be classed as an iconic record of the time.

Beck was never commercially unsuccessful. This forum is obsessed with sales and chart positions.
No one who loves a song, or album, has ever give a second thought as to where it will or could chart
Beck did just fine.

I did not know about any of that. I thought his music was quite original.
