If Johnny Depp is in it it's gonna be crap.

If Johnny Depp is in it and Tim Burton directed it it will be double crap.

Works for me!

This is why you're not a movie journalist.

Harsh to blame depp for Sweeney Todd being a musical. Almost certainly not his idea. Have you confused him with Helena Bonham carter?

If you take away the films she doesn't do with Tim Burton, Helen is a remarkable actress and for me chooses the right films.

The first minute is essential. Some films are badly made and the beginnings falter.

I thought that Curse of the Black Pearl, and Chocolat were excellent films. Johnny Depp might have been in them.

Why does a certain type of British person hate success?

All of the POTC films are absolutely dire.

Just look for the words "Steven Segal in..." and that gives a clue as to the quality of the movie.

Also any second sequel that calls itself "Something or other 3D"

And any title with the word "Ninja" in it.

No, the first one's good in my opinion. And I agree with Johnbee about Chocolat as well, thoroughly enjoyable. Depp's also good in Finding Neverland, so the OP's rule of thumb really doesn't work for me.

Also plenty of Oscar Best Picture winners are wonderful, applying such a pointless arbitrary rule as avoiding them all means you'd miss out on some brilliant films.

I do tend to avoid Tim Burton movies though, and I agree that anything entitled "Something or other 3D" is generally rubbish...

But it didn't win an Academy Award for Best Picture which is what kegsie originally said.

Equation of the bad modern movie:

Razzie ×Boll-(CGI+Sequel)^Bay + √franchise = Depp/(-2003)+Burton/Carter+(horror remake+
Sandler ^2)/Cruise

A certain anecdote about George Best, Miss World and piles of cash springs to mind...

This is my rule for spotting a bad film and its always worked out for me every time;

If I watch the film and I didn't like it, then I think its a bad film.
