I remember they used to refer to Dick Clark, American producer and host, as perennially young - then it seemed like all at once he fully looked his age. How old do you think Al is supposed to be in the show?”

A lot of men mature from ages 25 - 35, and then pretty much look that way for the next 10-15 years. They grow from being a young man to a man. I am willing to suspend my disbelief for now. Maybe in the next series they will have him in a career and in a relationship which would be a better match with the way he looks now. If they had sped his story up a little and had him find himself mid-season his looks and his story line might not be as incongruent. Just a thought.

I appreciate Acorn TV getting us Doc Martin in the US so quickly - but. . .how could you replace "Sailing" as Doc and Louisa's wedding dance song in the original UK version with whatever is on your site!! For those of us fans who know the story behind "Sailing" and Martin Clunes it's a crime.

Acorn Online: Clearing music in the U.S. is much different than the UK. It's often times the reasons some of the best shows aren't out at all.

What is the song that replaces Sailing?

Acorn Online: Not sure. We usually just get "international masters" from the content owners and they're responsible for swapping in cleared music.

That's interesting! Wonder if the "content owners" are the DM show owners or the music owners.

Maybe this explains it a little bit:

The show owners. In this case BP.

That's interesting. I learned something today. The most interesting part was the difference between licensing music for broadcast vs home video. Several popular shows that used a lot of licensed music when they were broadcasted have never been released on DVD for that very reason. And apparently in some DVD's they've actually cut scenes that include licensed music.

I guess I should stop feeling sad when I watch that scene and miss "Sailing". At least they didn't cut the scene!

This also explains the change in Penhale's ringtone in S5 and the replacing of music from "Oklahoma" (I think) in S4. I wonder how Roger and the schoolkids singing, "Never Ever" in S1 managed to slip by. Glad it did.

Would BP have used some kind of service to prepare the episodes, including finding a suitable replacement song (they had to find something with the same tempo, since M & L dance to it)? Acorn's comment at fb makes it sound like it came to them with the replacement already there, which I suppose makes sense.

This is the third time this has happened in this series. In S4E8 the harbor day dance, the British version had "Oklahoma!", the American Acorn version had some non-descript song. In S5E2 (British version), Penhale's ringtone at the AJ's funeral had something like "It's Only Going to Get Better" or words to that effect; the American Acorn version had the William Tell Overture (which I think is a funnier choice). In S6E1, I would think Rod Stewart would be happy that BP chose "Sailing" for the wedding dance, and waiving any problems with the Acorn version for distribution outside of England.

Maybe it's complicated even for the artist to waive any licensing problem. Oh, well. Que sera sera.

I think "Things Can Only Get Better" was a pop song that Tony Blaire used in his election campaign. But our British members will have to tell me if I am right about that.

Thanks for the link to this interview. I barely remember the movie, "Born Free" as a child, and I would like to see it again. I've heard MC mention it before. I think he's fascinated with the story and the people involved like George and Joy Adamson who have re-taught lions to go back into the wild.

Why do you think that nearly all of the Doc Martin FF authors are women?

I just rewatched the latest episode, and a couple of things jumped out that are bothering me:

1) Early in the episode, Ruth says to Al, "I need you to drive me to the station tomorrow." Clearly she did not go there to meet Margaret, who arrived that same day herself. But we do see Al bringing Ruth back the next day as well, which means she didn't go anywhere herself, so why did she need to go to the station?

2) What is Margaret really up to? She doesn't need a place to live; she said she came from Portugal, where she has a villa in her own name, as we learned in S2. If the villa was too expensive to keep up, she could have sold it and moved into something smaller. Did it not hit her until after the funeral that she is alone now? Apparently she has no friends? I notice she said to DM, "We're all we have now," as though LE and JH don't exist. Maybe, for her, in a way they don't.

Thoughts?

1. Ruth went out of town to do a psych eval on a murderer.
2. Those of us who are into spoilers know why Mommy Dearest came.
Spoiler
She came for money.

Thanks, CADMFAN. I am not into spoilers, so I think I better get off the forum for a few days. Ciao for now!

I was watching ep6 with my sister who had not seen it before and in the opening bedroom scene, after Louisa lays the (fake non-moving) baby on the bed, her and Martin stand at the bathroom entryway directing each other. As the scene plays out my sister asks 'where is Louisa's hand at?' when her and Martin 'kerfuffle' at the entryway. We rewound that scene several times and only came up with one answer. Anyone agree. Also the last scene of the ep when Martin, JH and the witch are in the surgery, the baby that plays JH is like the third person in the conversation. He cries the whole time she is holding him. Then when Martin takes JH from her, JH looks at her like she is a crazy lady and when she leaves the room and closes the door, JH looks back then forward again towards Martin, then does a quick look at the ceiling like he is 'rolling his eyes' then looks at Martin with a 'oh brother' look. Too precious.

No, they just do it themselves. It's easy to change music out. When editing the show they put it on a separate track/tracks. They have an in and out point for it from the UK master, they just find some music to fit that space of time and edit it in.

TV shows that syndicate programs internationally have international masters. Some of the reasons are:

Broadcast standards.
Music rights.
Sex Scenes/swearing: Some countries won't broadcast what we would so to avoid a scene being chopped they will do their own 'blurring' of video and edit out and/or replace swear words.

All TV shows have to be delivered to a TV station/network ready for air.

That's great...best sign of affection all season!
Did you also notice (as I did watching yesterday) that when Martin picks up Mummy's plate and he drops it on the ground he has to bend down lower than she is and he looks up at her with a very angry face. It made him look like an angry little boy looking up at his nasty Mum. Everything in this show is choreographed. You can find a reason for many gestures and movements. I find that fascinating.

At the end of the interview, I couldn't understand what he was saying to Julian Fellowes after he said they were neighbors. Did anyone else catch that?
I thought it was interesting that Alan Titchmarsh was trying to help him get a part on Downton Abbey!

I think he said that his jackahuahua won a rosette at Julian's dachshund's dog show and Julian said something to do with a new tradition or something. It was about dogs..what a surprise. I love it
