Emmerdale Farm (as it then was) was actually based on an RTE soap called The Riordans which began in 1965 and was recorded on location using an OB unit.

Alarmingly I Love My Country is still likely to be only the 2nd worst programme on BBC1 tonight with Nick 'Cardboard' Knowles and that bloody safe thing
Why can't the BBC do fun any more without it being patronising z-list filled nonsense? The title told you all you needed to know. |

I Love My Country was no worse (or better) than Splash, a bit of harmless fluff not trying to be anything else, probably won't watch it again but it was overly awful. Of course it will be called the worst thing ever/not bad depending on channel affiliation (the negative side are always more hyperbolic.) Reactions on here and twitter mean nothing anyway, they were always going to be negative just look at those for Splash and YFSF, although I thought people moaning about ILMC were just that without the humour the comments for the other two had.
It doesn't deserve to do Secret Service/Don't Scare the Hare bad, so hopefully it can level at 3/4m. |

Looks like there was a reason David Walliams pulled out of I Love My Country...
Having said that, I think it would be a shame if all Saturday night entertainment was beige and middle of the road, and it is good to take risks with shows that you could describe as bonkers every so often. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't and it'll be interesting to see which way ILMC goes, but its good to see BBC1 taking something of a risk with different shows like this and The Puppet Show next week instead of just commissioning another dark blue lighting quiz and hundreds of extra episodes of Pointless Celebrities. |

Shame the BBC2 Mel Smith tribute is little more than Griff doing a rather too short introduction of a 1995 Smith and Jones compilation.
Though it did give me chance to enjoy the "tenor who says wank" sketch. I remember that being the talk of the common room the day after it first aired. ![]() edit: ok. fair enough, Griff came back on to say there will be a longer tribute later in the year. |

Well apparently its been successful elsewhere. I cant imagine its vastly different to the versions in other countries. Outside of talent reality formats what or who would people watch?
Pre watershed tv is a problem. Iv just posted on the ILMC thread about the fact that outside of talent/reality formats there is very little out there. Ant and Dec are the only act now that would gain an audience if you stuck their names in front of a format. They don't have any competition so you end up with people like Frank Skinner who is brilliant imo but perhaps a bit hampered by the restrictions of pre-watershed tv-along with a host of other stand up comedians who like to add in the occasional eff and blind to their act. The Beeb has a particular problem with ideas and lack of names with the reputation to sell a family show. The very fact that the great Sir Bruce is still out there well into his eighties tells its own story and we can see why ITV pay Ant and Dec so much. Hopefully the suggested Michael McIntyre House Party style show will get the go ahead. Have to say though I cant imagine the people posting on the ILMC thread will be any more enthusiastic. |

I'm sure it'll win it's slot which seems to be all that matters lately when it comes to BBC1 summer filler, so need for these posts supporting it.
I didn't see it 'cos I'm on holiday, was it "isn't britain ruddy brilliant" semi-worthy type stuff like Robbie predicted? |

[quote=wizzywick;67630423]I Love My Country wasn't sophisticated. It wasn't a show to watch that required concentration. It was deliberately bonkers and was strangely jolly. For fifty minutes of TV to just watch and not think or have to analyse anything it served a purpose. I think people have rose tinted memories. /QUOTE]
Didn't stop YFSF being over analysed over the last few weeks as if it was the latest BAFTA award winning landmark drama. The light entertainment snobs have been all over that one every week. |

Betting plunge - Peter Capaldi now heavily odds-on with Betfair to be the next Doctor Who tomorrow.
Just before Matt Smith was cast, the bookies stopped taking bets on Paterson Joseph. He was a dead cert, apparently |

Also EE very close to Emmerdale in averages for July. |

If so, I wonder if that will see her replace Christine on Dancing On Ice for the final series?

Poor Christine if so. When is her handcuffs deal up?
It's not as though she's done a bad job on Dancing on Ice; the ratings have just been hurt by Call the Midwife. I can see why ITV are entertaining the idea of continuing without Torvil and Dean - the show is doing better than anything else would in that situation (outside possibly Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity...) |

Oh dear. Just seen a Big School trailer. Looks worse than I feared, plus it's clearly not a sitcom but a "comedy drama".
Seems a waste of a good cast, as the trailer certainly doesn't sell it. Looks like Waterloo Road with Walliams. I said it was launching in August for a reason (and dumped on Fridays)..... |
