8:30pm, in what is usually BBC1's lowest rating slot of the night, opposite Corrie.

If they were wanting to maximise ratings they would have announced it at 6pm!
Maximised ratings at 6pm on the hottest day of the year???

Frankly the only bit of news is exactly what ITV broadcast. BBC just airing 30 minutes of fluff.

Bit late now - everyone who was bothered just watched it on BBC One. Unless it's another bulletin where the reporter will be allowed to finish her sentence.

And it's a mess. Keeps cutting to adverts, sound drops and shockingly poor newsreading.

Brilliant, it's been on 2 minutes and you've already written it off.

Typical stuff, complain when ITV don't do anything, complain when they do.

When ITV do something it'd be nice if they could manage it competently.

The Duchess went into labour this morning; it's not like she suddenly popped it out like in the Carlsberg advert. They've had plenty of warning.

Both channels now covering this....pointless.

Thats nigh on 20 channels covering this for your average viewer.

Added to the fact its freezing outside so I can't escape it. It's everywhere!

The way it was so perfect for BBC1 you do wonder if it was timed to fit in the BBC schedule.

The news channel's hadn't even broken the news before BBC1 joined it.

It was almost too perfect. As for ITV, well, they clearly weren't in on the timings!

You're becoming as bad as SamuelW - the only reason why you want ITV to do a news bulletin is so the BBC's figures would go up.
Is this the go to insult now, I think that's the second time I've seen it today. There are many people as bad as SamuelW on this thread, they just get no where near as much criticism.

Both channels were going to be criticised no matter what they did, for showing too much or showing too little it just depends on peoples' agendas.

Precisely.

It's shockingly inept and I say that as a fan of ITV.

But heaven forbid someone have an actual opinion here without such ridiculous responses.

So. Will itvistas change their tune now, or wait til morning to gloat over itv's Corrie enhanced news special beating bbc1's?

Why is itv calling it "breaking news", you missed the boat!

That said, itv's offering is far better prepared, the bbc offering is a shambles! raworth clueless, boring old farts and Hungarian tourists being interviewed

I'm sure ITV will have their moment when Bradby gets them another exclusive interview.

They must be fuming; it couldn't have worked out much worse for them and more perfectly for BBC One.

I wonder if ITV have learnt from 2010 when they didn't cover the Prime Minister handover?

Also - when was the last time ITV and BBC were covering a News Special live in the 21:00 hour?

What have they done wrong exactly?

The royal announcement was made about 1 minute after Coronation Street started, so ITV made the announcement at the next available opportunity, the middle ad break, and then went on air with a full programme immediately after Corrie had finished. They've got OBs, reporters, guests lined up, packages prepared etc.

That is because there is absolutely nothing to say.

At least Burley is entertaining. The BBC must have really worked hard to find the dullest, most patronising and uninteresting news reporters and presenters. Credit to them

To be fair to ITV, now they've got a grip on the coverage it's pretty decent. It's just a shame they had a nightmare with the ad break bulletin and the start of the News Special.

Very surprised they didn't wait until 10pm, they could have easily got a 6.5m average over on BBC1 for the news.

ITV drop a show that would have held up well against the speculation news for a bulletin that won't break 2 million. Pointless!
