To anyone complaining on here about ITV as well as the BBC showing news specials, get a grip!

This is a moment of national importance. The future King of this country has been born.

Yes there will be a lot of inane analysis and people yappering on for an hour, but it's an important moment for the whole of the UK.

I agree, this is, regardless of own opinions, an important moment in our history.

We should be thankful we don't adapt the US model of Special Reports - god knows how US viewers cope.

Eve Pollard just mentioned whether Prince William will come out like Prince Charles did after William was born - which explains why both BBC One and ITV are showing the baby coverage. They wouldn't want to give that scoop to the other.
Peter Hunt suggests not: https://twitter.com/BBCPeterHunt/sta...08576751611904

No it's not. Most of us will be dead by the time the genetic lottery winner takes the throne.

A child has been born. No name. Thats it. A child. Not Jesus. It's not the second coming

We are in a digital age. There is no need for a 'normal' channel to break broadcast. There are nigh on 20 channels broadcasting this news. Repeating the same endless guff and filler.

Yes; a member of the press interviewed on ITV just suggested not as well.

Exactly why it should be broadcast on the BBC but from a commercial and ratings point of view ITV have missed a trick- no one is gonna watch their coverage of the BBC.

Funny stuff, from 830 to 900 every post was slating ITV for not providing coverage, it was an example of how poor they are now blah blah. Now from 900 everyone is slating ITV for providing coverage saying they should offer an alternative against the BBC.

Never a clearer example of damned if you do...

A bit of a weird decision as ITV really don't have the resources for rolling news and it shows. As their coverage has been very studio dominated with Eve Pollard gossiping and repeating items they have done earlier.

ITV have missed a trick by not showing something alternative to those incapable of not looking past 1, 2, 3 and 4 which is an alarming amount of people

I agree with that much; I think ITV played it right with the bulletin midway through Coronation Street then the News Special. If they had cut it off at 9pm they would have been criticised so it is a case of damned if you do...

Agreed. I really don't understand the rationale behind this decision at all. Better to show a decent alternative to BBC1's coverage rather than do exactly the same thing...
They knew Corrie would mean they will beat BBC1's news special, and they won't miss the bragging rights over that - royal baby born and the nation saw it on itv. Bigger than coming top on Christmas Day!

Comedy moment of the night, bbc news reporter telling us children in Kate's home village have been told "they can stay up to watch Kate give birth"

brilliant!

Here's the issue - ITV is a commercial channel but some of the time it's not expected to act like one.

"Kate"? What's happened to decorum?

I bet the BBC News Special will beat the ITV News Special - people automatically tune into BBC, whatever the lead in.

They must have thought they would receive less flack for doing a BBC and doing live coverage- considering the BBC and Sky offer superior and extensive coverage it seems a bit silly and they will lose ratings and money.

I wonder how much the cancelled ads have cost them tonight?

You're right, Ofcom expects them to cover official state occasions without ads, and I assume this is one of them.

The BBC is playing how many ex aides to the Queen can we ask questions they don't know the answer too. Guessing they have had a documentary planned for ages.

ITV's finances are robust enough to be able to drop about 15 minutes of adverts and not cause a crisis in their accounts department.

I don't think there's much difference between the BBC and ITV to be honest.

As I said, ITV is a commercial channel but is expected to accept a drop in ratings and money when required. It's an odd situation to be in.

They've had 5 outside broadcasts with reporters in all the key places, and 2 studios guests. Quite good considering they don't have a rolling news channel.
