I also remember the same for EastEnders and Holby City in May 2010.

The ratings? Well: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=4708

Even if ITV had a better news output people default to BBC, they just do. I agree with your point and people should accept ITV is akin to C4 and C5 in reality- no one expects C4 and C5 to break programming why should ITV?

Long Lost Family will now run a week longer than expected though, so they'll get another week of good ratings.

Agreed.”

BBC should drop their programming to announce the election result regardless- ITV should not

Tonight will have low ratings though so it balances out

Twitter generally unreliable but both networks getting hammered for 'fawning and filling' on the topic. The BBC's special at 10.45 to me is an utter peetake

Twitter is absolutely loving Kay Burley...not as she might like mind

Won't happen though- annoyed as BB won't be getting almost 1.7million tonight

It's the mindset of the nation; at the start ITV could afford to take this approach with little to no opposition. Now the opposition exists but the mindset has not changed.

I wonder what they've got lined up to follow - Doc Martin? They have to fit in everything before I'm A Celebrity so they may have to switch Long Lost Family's night for one show.

Finding it outrageous that neither Al-Jazeera or Russia Today are carrying this vastly important news

I doubt the schedules are that jam packed, there is probably some sort of one off drama or one off factual schedules for a Monday at some point in the future that could be moved to another night.

Sure they would have planned for a break in the schedule due to the fact they've known there will be a birth for 9 months

Al Jazeera breifly mentioned the news in their 2130UK headlines

I'd laugh if the ITV News Special did beat the BBC News Special (can't see how) but the BBC Ten O'Clock News beat ITV News at Ten.

Just watched the BBC One/News Channel handover again on iPlayer, and its fairly obvious that BBC would have known at least five/ten minutes beforehand that they were going to BBC One at 20:30.

I heard someone called Philip stuck a tenner on it at around 4.30 today

If they had they should have put a banner across the screen during EastEnders saying 'BBC News Bulletin to follow'. Practically everyone would have known what that meant yet they wouldn't have broken the presumed embargo.

The fact they had a very low level presenter announce the news on BBC1 would suggest not. Also apparently there was no mention of the news special over the credits of EastEnders, the first what was known of it was the ident introducing it.

If they would have known would they have broke the news via banner EastEnders or left it 10 mins to stop an exodus to BBC News and Sky News leaving EE with awful ratings?

ITV are using a special 'it's a boy' ident now by the way, in the style of heir usual set. The ad break before News at Ten was baby themed, so I wouldn't worry about the advertisers finances quite yet.

Hmm, not sure. I think it might literally of been no more than 30 secs/1 min. BBC One advertised Panorama as normal at the end of EastEnders.

But I think the announcement was deliberately timed for the BBC schedule (but I don't believe the BBC had a say in it, or were told any sooner than the rest of the media). If they had 5 minutes Sophie Raworth would of done it, not Annita McVeigh.

Maybe they were told 5 - 10 minutes before hand but that said it is easier for BBC One or BBC Two to switch to BBC News Channel for news report / special than it is for ITV.

It was being reported before 8.30 that an announcement was due and you don't need to have a brain to know what that would be.

I think that's exactly what WILL happen!

Certainly ITV will win the battle of the peaks, and they will be in a pr frenzy about that. Wonder if Cummins is on annual leave?
