Not sure what you mean though, in the end, IACD does incredibly well and SCD is a sleb show, even with the dancing.

Not really sure how you say the only shows in this genre either, there sleb versions of Pointless, FF, and many other shows do okay.

Think it's wishful thinking on your part TBH.

It will be more interesting to see the puppet ratings next week and if people keep watching some will want to watch it back to see what all the fuss is about.

Sources are saying that in the new series of XFactor, six contestants per category are in the judges homes stage. Previously, there have been 8 contestants which gets cut down to 4 for the live shows. So assuming they halve, it will be down to 3 contestants per category for the finals. Does this mean the live shows will run for fewer weeks this year. ITV obviously worried about how strong SCD is so dont want as many live episodes this year, which could clash against it.

That doesn't make sense. All episodes of TXF are on the same weekends as all episodes of SCD until TXF final, regardless of how many live shows there are as TXF starts 4-6 weeks earlier.

Getting ahead of yourself there. Each judge had 3 acts last year after judges houses (then they added one wildcard for a total of 13). 2010 and 2011 were the only years that they had 16 finalists (and in 2011 they eliminated 4 of them in week 1).

Every other year since 2005 has had 12 finalists and 10 live shows with the exception of 2007 which had 9 (due to the Rugby World Cup)

The rounds were mildly entertaining, the puppets were mildly entertaining, but there was no obvious reason why puppets were hosting the show with a strong enough link to the games they were playing. The rounds could have featured in a normal human show.

In many ways it's been C5's biggest triumph to date, making this work. Before BB came along they had no track record to speak of in entertainment, the show itself was in the doldrums after things didn't end well on C4 and it didn't have much in the way of time off to recover from that. On paper it should have become the failure some so desperately wanted it to be. But it hasn't. They've saved a fun format and landed themselves a ratings banker show to go to war with and build a schedule around. It's great for them and it's great for viewer choice.

As for CBB, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the sums of money that is reportedly paid for stars to appear. I'm sure it's a lot in one or two cases but not as much as some of the reports which tend to grossly exaggerate for the sake of a headline. And some of the lesser names in the lineup won't be earning all that much at all, relatively speaking. It's all factored into the show's budget and with ratings still rising (for CBB also: final in Jan was highest rated C5 final yet) there is no need for any changes here. It is doing its job, indeed as is the civilian version now.

There were 6 contestants at judges homes last year too. In fact, there have been 6 in every series except series 7 and series 8 ever since they expanded to 4 judges. The normal format is 6 from each category to judges homes with 3 making it to the live shows, and as there are 4 categories that means 12 contestants across 10 weeks, which is completely standard. The only series' that have differed from that were series 7 and series 8, when 8 contestants got to judges homes and were cut to 4 for the live shows. However they still had the same number of live weeks (10) and got rid of the extra contestants either through multiple double eliminations (series 7) or by getting each judge to dump one act in their category on the first live show (series 8). Last year they reverted back to 6 at judges homes and 3 for the live shows (although they had a 13th wildcard contestant too). This year is just following that format again as normal and there is no suggestion that the number of live shows will be cut.

Ya congrats to Channel 5...they've really brought life back to Big Brother. It was absolutely the right the decision for Channel 4 to axe it..if it had stayed put I think the ratings would've kept falling. Lets not forget it getting axed and then a high profile revival brought back alot of interest.

Having said that, i'll be taking a pass on Celeb BB after this series because I still think its over kill.

In other Channel 5 news, I've seen the Ozzy drama advertised again, really looking forward to it but it'll probably struggle, probably as bad as Love/Hate has done.

Well I really enjoyed 'That Puppet Game Show'. Obviously the headline average figure for this episode won't tell us an awful lot about how it was received but nonetheless I hope it is a decent figure to allow for next week's episode to still have a respectable figure despite poor retention. I mean, talking hot dogs and some hilarious one-liners, what's not to love?

Oh and I'm an adult.

My pessimistic side is just expecting it to flop though - can I copyright 'That Puppet Flop Show' please?

Tonight's Comedy Roadshow repeat is blatently obviously a repeat as it seems to feature 'unknown newcomer' John Bishop as one of the turns. Some repeats date more than others whereas some can be got away with more easily. The time comes when they are no longer suitable for BBC1 and have to move into a 'classic repeat' slot on a digital channel.

On yesterday's Pointless one of the questions was about famous Chris's and one of the answers was 'Current host of the Radio 1 Breakfast show'

There was also one a few weeks ago asking about venues in next year's London Olympics.

Normally with Pointless you can barely tell the repeats from the new episodes but in these cases it is obvious. Will such dated repeats effect the ratings, and actually let people know that they are repeats, probably not.

Does anyone think that when X Factor eventually finishes, ITV will bring back Pop Idol? I was watching some clips of it today on YouTube and it made me feel nostalgic

it only lasted two series, but it had the potential to run and run.

No, I think that's done and it doesn't really work to go from X Factor to Pop Idol especially when you'll not get Ant & Dec, Simon or Pete involved which eliminates any nostalgic appeal it might have had. If they wanted to keep in the music talent show field then I reckon they'd be looking for something like The Voice which can be presented as a step forward.

I doubt it. It would just seem like a huge step backwards and the format isn't as good as X Factor.

I suspect they'd look to replace X Factor with some kind of talent show, but it'd most likely be a completely new show, probably not entirely dissimilar to XF.

Speaking of XF, I like the sound of the format changes this year, the new bootcamp in particular sounds like a big improvement. They're advertising it a lot and the trailers (especially the new one) are good. The panel looks much better with Sharon there too. I am cautiously optimistic about this series at the moment (although no doubt that'll all change at some point!

With XFactor getting a record number of trails (5 weeks), the later start date and the fact it won't be up against a live event like the Paralympic Games, it should be aiming to launch comfortably higher than last year, around 9.5million.

In a way, I feel like The Voice should be what Pop Idol was. Pop Idol still managed to be entertaining (helped by Ant and Dec presenting) but it still managed to be 'credible' as it had no joke acts in the top ten, and all of the finalists were good singers. I guess you are right, it would feel like a backward step bringing Pop Idol back, as X Factor has took the talent show genre to a whole new level, its production levels make it event TV, whilst Pop Idol was less glossy and more intimate and innocent and didn't rely so much on controversy and judge rivalry.

I think a step forward for The X Factor would be to allow bands with instruments to enter, rock bands who want to be the next Queen or Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I haven't seen the new trailer yet. I think X Factor might see another drop this year, but I can't see it being a significant decline like the past two years have suffered. I think the show will stabilise very quickly.

X Factor hasn't posted a year on year increase since September 2011. Last year it was down double digit percentages for every single episode, 19% across the series and the final Saturday show of the series (in December!) had 9.3m. So to suddenly go into a 10% gain based on a "10 years of X Factor" mash-up seems like quite a lofty ambition.

Channel 5 have saved BB. I wish they were around in the eighties and saved another dying format, and made it prosper to a small loyal audience.
