On the Casualty/Holby 'revamp' there are some things happening later this year.

Spoiler
Ex Taggart actor and current Corrie star John Michie is joining Holby as a roguish medic, ITVs Paul O'Grady is appearing in a few episodes as a patient and ex Holby favourite head doctor 'Connie Beauchamp' is returning to Holby but moving shows to run Casualty and seriously liven up that series.

The high ratings for ITV from 7.00pm until 7.30 last night were brought about by a similar situation to the one which allowed BBC One to rate highly on the night David Cameron did a deal to be allowed to become PM:
Live news event. CHECK!
Tuesday evening. CHECK!
Soap fans waiting patiently for their soap. CHECK!

The only difference being EastEnders getting moved to the next evening in 2010, but Emmerdale staying on the same night, presumably in the hope all of the 6m+ audience would stay around, but a chunk of them drifted away.

Oh it was horrible.
Btw Why are This Morning employing Ronan Keating's ex wife?

They're both making sitcoms for the critics and industry types, rather than the viewers.

I doubt EE was getting 11m back then.

Come back George Dixon all is forgiven!”

BBC1's scheduling incompetence over The Apprentice final and royal baby appearance has been quite a thing to behold!

Sky's sitcoms include jokes which is probably where BBC2 is going wrong I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure making them funny helps.

Will it get the ratings up for both?

No, but as last night, it was a combination of patient soap fans, and news enthusiasts who combined to make the big rating, rather than solely the news coverage.

Does anyone know what BBC Two, Channel 4, and Channel 5 got in the 8pm hour, as not overnights have been reported...?

Many thanks!

That's the problem in a nutshell. Critics and award juries will rave and then hardly anybody else watches.

And despite that BBC2 has won BAFTA's Best Situation Comedy award twice in the last three years with Rev and Twenty Twelve.

Wow massive ratings for the ITV News Special last night, so many millions more have watched the Royal Baby news on ITV than the BBC across both nights this week, who would have predicted that?

Major ouch for EastEnders also, when did it last get a sub 5m rating?

How does the rating for Love your Garden compare with last week, did the ED lead in boost it at all?

Probably not excessively but with figures in the 4 million plus I think the BBC will regard these as 'bankers' anyhow given the large chunks of air time they take up.

You only have to see the crash of Waterloo Road since the idiotic move to Scotland (widely argued against on here long before they made it) to appreciate the difference between ratings success and failure for these sorts of continuous dramas.

It would be a risky move to commission anything new that could run for as many years as these series and still pull in such figures.

Casualty took over that Saturday drama slot from Juliet Bravo in the mid 80s - if I recall correctly.

If you re-launched JB now would it better Casualty in the ratings? Much as I would love that (it was filmed in the Rossendale Valley where I come from) the world has moved on and even Bacup (where JB police station really was) has had the brutal murder of Sophie Lancaster, that has in itself led to Julie Hesmondalgh leaving Corrie.

Casualty has done remarkably well to survive all of that three decades of change.

Spoiler
Yes Casualty BADLY needs a kick up the arse, and is being outperformed by Holby in every way, so the Connie move is a clear step in the right direction, although she's not on screen until March! Oliver Kent, who was producer of Casualty until about 2 years ago, is now exec producer of both shows, so he's obviously trying add a bit more pizzazz to the older series.

About a month ago? The weather was the main excuse being used then.

I hadn't realised they had got such a low rating on multiple occasions recently. EastEnders must be in worse shape than I thought.

Thanks for those Rzt.

Bit awkward how Andy23 was having a dig at Casualty the other week saying it would hold up better than YFSF because of it's pensioner audience when Casualty is pulling in more younger viewers!
