I'd be interested how the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony rates on BBC3. Best thing on TV tonight! (imo)

Yes excellent share for it, and I agree it's the best soap at the moment. However when praising one soap one must criticise another (preferably Eastenders), it's a DS rule.
That share for Emmerdale is amazing - when did it last get 37%? And while it happens to be firing on all cylinders at the moment, EE is probably worse than even that dreadful period it had in the middle of the last decade. Which has resulted in the current Emmerdale "victories", things that never used to happen. The show has had plenty of high points and huge episodes over the years, but even when they brought in high ratings, the same episode of EE that night would usually still rate higher. What's happening at the moment is a bit of a milestone, even if it does all change (which it probably will). This is as much about EE being in trouble as it is about Emmerdale being great and I don't think credit should be taken away from it - its ratings wins are not just down to another show's decline. |

I wonder if the athletics would have rated better overall had BBC1 dropped EastEnders for the night and ran it all on BBC1.
It did OK, I think. Not much different to what might have occupied the slot otherwise. In reality, it's about as much as you could have expected for a meet that - despite the excellent presentation - doesn't really add up to all too much. I still expect the big moments at the World Championships to do well and feel the benefit of a 2012 boost. It's obviously a fallacy to suggest that interest hasn't tailed off dramatically. It was always bound to. But I'm still quite confident that the level it settles at will be a good stretch ahead of 2011. And that progress is what it's all about. |

Was hoping the "directors cut" would cut out Trevor Nelson though!

Should we not just have an EastEnders ratings thread for people to discuss every EE minutiae?

It's not that one "must" do it, it's just the fact the gulf in quality has never been so wide so people are going to comment on it.

On Monday Eastenders was 700,000 ahead of Emmerdale so it's not like the former is consistently ahead. We will have to see what happens after the weather takes a turn for the worse (which it is doing) and after the murder storyline boost dies down. Regardless, Emmerdale is doing pretty well right now. Emmerdale has held up during the period, whilst EE and Corrie have been hit by the weather. |

And at the same time awful share for EastEnders.
At one time the only chance ED had of beating EE was if they clashed, and even then they didn't always win. Now ED is getting a higher rating with increasingly regularity. FOUR episodes of Emmerdale have beaten EastEnders this week. I admit the share for EE was low but again that's was more down to the fact it was Friday and EE usually gets around 30% anyways. |

The picture still isn't that clear with the heatwave effecting figures for the last few weeks.

I can't believe we are still talking about soap ratings on here. Even the soap thread doesn't seem that bothered by them. Where are the moderators I've been ban for constantly talking about soaps in the wrong thread. Why are some aloud to carry on.

People saying this discussion is boring, well sometimes it is, but the situation this week is different and worth being mentioned - plus they are soaps, on most days, and this being a ratings thread, yes it's going to be commented on. What do people expect when on most days of the week they are featured in the ratings?! |

As I said, I expect it to return to normal again, it always does. The point is this, even in summer, is something that never usually happens. I just think it's interesting and I think Emmerdale deserve some credit - but yes of course they have been aided by being good in the hot summer whilst EE hasn't.

This is the Ratings Thread; shouldn't we be able to talk about all figures here? Admittedly, when we start delving into WHY show is doing badly then maybe we're moving slightly off topic as it were.

Then discuse them in the soap ratings thread.
And I'm hardly going overboard - I keep reiterating, I'm pointing out something unusual, not the usual generic comments. Can't help but feel you're being a bit defensive. The Voice/X Factor are on once a week, doesn't stop that discussion taking up most of the thread when they're on (and I'm not complaining about that either). Anyway I've said my bit, and when EE returns to its position as always beating EM, it will be a case of "of course", though I doubt it will be deserved, at least not for a while. |

No because it's perfectly valid here

Their biggest new drama seems to be Atlantis, all the other major dramas seem to be for next year (Three Musketeers, The Ark, The Casual Vacancy, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), it's their returning dramas that will take over most of Autumn. The Paradise is 8 episodes so that and New Tricks will fill up Tuesdays to the end of the year. Last Tango, if it airs this year, might go on Sundays. Ripper Street looks to be starting earlier than last year so that could be on Thursdays/Fridays, as I doubt they'll put in on Sunday again.
There's also quite a few crime dramas commissioned, not sure when for, such as By Any Means from the creator of Hustle. I think there's a David Tennant drama coming up and there's romantic drama The 7:39 written by David Nicholls which has a decent cast (Oliva Colman.) |

And there is also Quirke. The DVD release has been postponed to September 9th, so it will probably air on Sundays when The White Queen runs out.
