I always assumed that it was on more often as well, but as
Steve Williams mentioned, people forget when it's on and few will realise if it doesn't come on in any one month. Looking at the
BBC Programmes website, excluding recorded specials and counting only regular, live editions, there were the following numbers of shows each year from 2007 to 2012:
2007 - 9
2008 - 10
2009 - 11
2010 - 10
2011 - 8
2012 - 7
So there has been a cutback in expensive live broadcasts,
possibly inspired by DQF, but there could be other explanations - crime has fallen a lot in recent years! Anyway, I've assumed four more for this year (which may include one special), for a total of 8.
