Is there a technical reason why non-subscription Youview (not the BT or TalkTalk versions) does not support streaming services? Even the NowTV subscription doesn't including streaming on a Youview box (it does on all other supported devices).

Is this just the current commerical nature of the platform (not enough money in any content providers offering it unless the platform is bigger or more money to be made, or sky wants to encourage their own platform etc) or can these boxes simply not technically do it? Could it come in the future?

Catch up seems embedded well, but the absence of any streaming seems like a waste of a major feature of any internet connected service.

Apologies if this has been covered hundreds of times elsewhere. It's a bit confusing looking for youview threads, they're all over the place.

There should be a dedicated Youview forum on DS, it's a pain looking in three or four different places for news.

It's not technically possible at the moment to stream, however that functionality is supposed to be implemented in a huge update at the end of this month/beginning of next month that is rumoured to see a lot of streaming services joining the platform. Although nobody knows what they are.

My understanding, which may be very wrong (VisionMan will probably be able to correct me), is that the TT box does support streaming services, but independent services like NowTV are unable to provide a streaming service because the BT box doesn't support it.

Something to do with Multicasting and the BT box should be getting an update very soon to allow it (ready for the BT Sport launch) which may allow other independent channels to come on to the platform.

I'm hoping for more HD services than there is space for in the traditional broadcast airwaves will arrive streamed, hopefully stuff like Film 4 HD or Dave HD

They're not currently capable but they'll be getting firmware updates soon to fix the problem. TalkTalk took the route of making the extra channels available from launch through a 'player' - you just can't record them etc. BT chose not to offer them at all. They'll shortly be allocated EPG slots on both though, so they'll be fully functional. When the update arrives, third party apps and services will be able to launch.

Additional HD streaming services will be entirely dependent on what carriage deals BT and TalkTalk have agreed with each channel, however if a channel or service wanted to launch their own independent app with independent payment for all YouView users, it's a different story.

A beta firmware was released a couple of weeks ago that provides internet tv channel support but so far there are no channels to make use of it. If past release patterns hold true, I would expect the 'official' release of the firmware in the next week or so.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. I'm looking forward to streaming arriving on Youview and seeing how many providers offer a service.

+1 for support of a youview forum somewhere on DS.

Do you think the gaps in channel numbers means more could be coming to BT TV soon as well?

Is that through a black Vision box or a YouView box? I thought the extra channels started at 851 but I'm guessing you're on YouView?

How'd you get on the beta programme? They don't tend to advertise these very widely. :/
