Why do grapes taste awful at the moment?
dmuk

They have like a chemical taste to them, like they've been soaked in fairy liquid to clean them. Really off putting and I had to throw them away. I've tried both Asda and Tesco.

I know we don't get the best fruit and veg in this country but I've had better grapes than what is on the shelves at the moment.

Never had a problem with Waitrose or Sainsbury's grapes personally.

Did you rinse them before eating them?

I ate a whole punnet of grapes last night, from Morrisons they were lovely and crisp.

I only buy grapes from Sainsburys too. Tescos ones are just yuck.

Yeah I wash them, always wash fruit where the skin is edible.

Never had a problem with seeds though, seedless have always been so.

I've noticed a whitish powdery coating on red grapes lately. I wash them in 1 part apple cider vinegar and 9 parts water - I just leave them to soak for 5 mins then rinse - it kills any bacteria on them, makes them last a bit longer and gets rid of the chemically coating whatever it is?

That sounds like 'bloom' - its simply wild yeast.

Yes, I had a lovely punnet from Morrisons last week too. But then I always find Morrisons fruit to be superior to Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys.

A lot of the overproduced, cheap fruit, taste like cack.

The others must be awful then - I have had to take fruit and veg back to Morrisons recently, soft and burst tomatoes - bananas black the following day - rotten potatoes in non-see through bag and soft and bruised strawberries.
I only bought them there because it was MIL shopping - M & S everytime - the cost a little more but last longer especially the bags of rocket etc.

No, just not as nice as Morrisons overall. But then I think that's partly down to me being able to pick my own fruit at my local Morrisons, whereas the other three pick for us when we have them home delivered.

Picked some more grapes up from Tesco (happened to be in there), and these taste much better, not firm and fruity as I usually like, still a bit soft, but no chemical taste and edible.

No wonder some people avoid fruit, it's a lottery what you're going to get, and it does seem pointless eating it if you're not enjoying it, it should after all be treated like a dessert, albeit a healthy dessert.

The last couple of lots of grapes I have bought have been horrid as well, bought from the same places I usually do and they've not been nice at all.

So bloody true. Wish there was a way to sample stuff first, strawberries especially..

Funny you should say that. I bought some grapes from Tesco and they were awful couple of weeks ago they were soapy in taste. Tried Asda's not too bad but a bit sour. Last week I bought some from Sainsbury and they were lovely. On Friday on my way from work picked some seedless red grapes from waitrose and they were lovely too.

I'm not a great lover of grapes but my daughter usually buys them and she doesn't eat them all so I pop them in a freezer bag and freeze them - great to nibble on or put some fat free yoghurt over when dieting. Obviously eat them frozen - water melon works frozen too - as does banana, sliced frozen - left out 10 mins before needed, whisked with a hand blender or small blender - banana ice cream! Great for babies & children as a spoon of yoghurt can be added at the blending stage. Handy for visitors too.

I totally agree. The blueberries I bought at the weekend from Aldi were lovely and juicy but the ones I picked up from Tesco last week were dryer than sandpaper. I don't think I've had any bad fruit from Aldi.

I've got a few things from Aldi's and they have been OK. Would go more often if I had one close by. I do drive to the nearest one sometimes to buy their pasta, olive oil and pesto sauce.

I shop in Aldi a lot as there is one the end of my road, ironically it was from there that one of punnets of Grapes I was complaining about earlier came from (the other was from Tesco) - bought loads from there before though and they've been lovely, but as the OP said the ones around at the moment just don't seem nice.
