I cannot believe that the Tom Daly story is headlines
What has the country come to when someone's sexuality is for discussion on TV
It's his business and not for national discussion! Plus I cannot believe that people are at all interested

I hate how showbiz news and actual news have merged during the last decade. They should be kept totally seperate. The way something like Katie Price's latest marriage/divorce/child can get a prime spot on the evening news is ludicrous and insulting.

You're missing the point though. There is a wider issue about sexuality in society and sport. Also the story itself from a news point of view could be the fact he felt forced to make such an announcement publicly. This story may have a big effect on gay community and closet homosexuals as a whole to another reason it's the news.

Also news isn't always about what you feel is worthy, but if it's of interest to a lot of people or if a major life event that has happened to someone known to most people, why shouldn't it be reported?

I can't talk for all broadcasters but it was towards the end of the BBC 6'O Clock bulletin so not being treated as a major story.

I'm going to hazard a guess here...

I think Tom went public because the relationship he's been in for several months appears to be one he very probably didn't want to hide or lie about, with people constantly asking 'why are you with this man'...it's tiresome and at some point people are going to work it out. You might as well tell them first in our Twitter/celeb-obsessed society.

The mainstream news and media then got hold of it and beat it to death all last night. Some of the segments managed to cleverly tie it in with the wider issue in sport and brought in other sportspeople and reactions. But by the end of the night it was just reporting his video and that he was in a relationship 'with a man'.

It was not Tom's doing. He probably didn't want to be headline news all yesterday but it was always going to happen given the media's love of a story. But the sensible coverage covered it well I thought.

Yes I agree it was covered very well.
If you are in the world of entertainment/sport you always will be in the public eye and news about the sport stars entertainment stars will boast up sells of the papers and magacines.
