no medication makes your body accumulate and store fat.
Trying educating yourself on mental health and just what some medication can do to you. It's not pretty. |

Uh, I like how everyone is saying she's a vile person, and yet condemning her for doing something that actually involves her trying to understand something.
You think she's doing this out of the goodness of her heart? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. |

many more people in Britain are far bigger than we were a few generations ago simply because of the convenience of poor quality and more unhealthy foods.

She might put it one way, but then she's an arrogant person. I think she seemed to genuinely acknowledge, as did Holly Willoughby and Philip Scofield who are hardly her biggest fans from the looks of things, that it made her more emotional and she found it difficult. I actually think she's seeing being overweight as difficult and not a simple fix for people who have always been that way, and not led a very active lifestyle. She may or may judge people still for how they got to be overweight, but even if she loses it relatively quickly, I don't think she'll be saying it was so easy. Anyway, my point is it's hypocritical essentially calling her a bitch and then acting like a bunch of bastards. Isn't she supposed to be the narrow-minded one? Or are you all unaware of what being open-minded really entails? |

Some medications do cause weight gain, though. My mum's weight rocketed when she was put on Olanzapine (an antipsychotic drug) and Pregabalin. Even her doctors warned of it. Similarly, long term steroid use can have the same effect. Once gained, it's very hard to shift.
I think the increase in overweight and obese people is a complex social issue which cannot be reduced to soundbytes. Katie Hopkins is one person with a particular bias and not really the best advocate for getting to grips with the issues. If the best scientists haven't cracked it, I wouldn't bank on her input. |

I'd say they are eating too much poor food. Ready meals, frozen foods, fast food and calorie laden junk. It's too easy to just load the trolley up with this stuff at the supermarket instead of cooking something proper from scratch.
I agree with your second point though, many people are very sedentary and do little to no exercise. |

Actually it is well known that many anti-depressants cause weight gain in many people.
Especially SSRI's, they can change your metabolism. They mess with the wiring in the head too. Also the birth control pill, asthma drugs, can cause weight gain too. The changes in the diets in the pasts is that we have way too much sugar in our food, low calorie and "Sugar Free" food are full of chemicals which they didn't have then, plus people have a been work/life balance than they do not. I have a friend who has a very active son, he plays football, swims competitively, rides his bike but he gained weight purely when he started to eat school dinners, instead of a packed lunch. Women stayed at home with the family and had much more labour intensive house work, without washing machines etc. They had more time to cook from stratch too. Now many women are having to juggle work, home and children, they don't have much time to cook, get homework done and children bathed and into bed. And they often graze at work, many not bothering with lunch breaks and are working longer hours for no extra money (just how Katie likes work to be!). Plus prices are rising ever more. |

Oh another one...if one does not have a mental illness then one is 'ignorant' about the issue.

I don't think she is doing it for anything other than trying to stroke her ego by proving a point, but I also think she does make an important point in that there are too many excuses for people being over weight. I think it's a good thing that she has experienced far more emotion and difficulties than she expected by being overweight and that has allowed her to see for some people, it's not easy.
I do agree with her though that in most cases, there is no good excuse for being overweight and that if one is truly committed to losing weight (health difficulties aside) that it can be done. I do acknowledge that she's not doing it in an entirely realitic way (such as over years), but then again I'm not sure anyone would want to do that. It is much easier for someone to think 'I'm overweight because of XYZ....' rather than acknowledging that it might be their own fault and I think she is right, that it seems every day there is a new 'reason' for people to be overweight. I think also she highlights well how a snack here and there builds up so people don't realise how they gained the weight. Don't get me wrong, I don't like the woman, but I think she is proving a valuable point, even if it isn't for entirely sincere reasons. |

I had hoped that TV producers eventually tired of her and stopped booking her, but alas she was just stuffing her fat gob full of grub.

Nonsense. A snack here and there does not make a person gain nearly 4 stone in three months.

appeared ........ ( from America ) -women work far more, but men haven't taken up the home workload, so less time for cooking from scratch hence reliance on ready meals -greater reliance on sugars and cheap oils in manufactured foods by retailers chasing profit -advertisers convinced us that "its ok to eat between meals" and that "chocolate that weighs so little" will not make us put on weight -less emphasis on cookery lessons in schools, with them even being dropped for a generation in the '90s and '00s -work tends to be far less physical but we work longer hours so even less time for excercise |

I do appreciate medication can cause weight gain. However, I am heartily of folk blaming everyone but themselves for their obesity.
There comes a time when you take control of what foods you choose to eat. Most of us would love to eat burgers and cakes, but if you want to lead a healthy life and look good, self control is needed. Moderation is the key. |
