The Sun is being very cynical in publishing it as the article points out Hopkins column would have been immediately spiked if another journalist had submitted it. They get to air extremely offensive right wing views under her peculiar 'brand'. So rather than respond to her perhaps it's better to take the battle to the people giving her a platform and stop reading/listening/watching.

She's a nasty nasty piece of work who doesn't deserve any of the publicity or airtime she so longs for and is unfortunately given. What I find more unsettling and worrying is that slowly and gradually these right wing views will start to feel "the norm" and almost acceptable to many people in this country.

There is already so much ignorance about immigration with refugees, asylum seekers, economic migrants, even second generation immigrants all being classed together as "immigrants coming here to bleed us dry" - and it only takes some idiot newspaper to exploit this to the masses and use immigrants as the scapegoat for all the countries problems - as Hitler did in the 1930s.

Not perfect - because we don't live in a perfect world - but certainly more appealing than de-humanising people by calling them cockroaches and leaving them to die.

To see both the Independant (hand-wringing) and the Telegraph (blogging her LBC show) giving this ridiculous troll attention is seriously depressing. There's no cure for her - they both seem to accept that - and both acknowledge that they're keeping her on the radar by giving her attention and agreeing that ignoring her is the only way she'll disappear - and yet here they both are, unable to resist giving her what she wants.

right and wrong. right in that the uk was part of the coalition that wrecked libya unjustly. wrong as nearly all of the migrants arent even from libya but many countries distant like somalia and nigeria. so they travel for weeks/ months to unstable libya knowing its very dangerous because thats why / how they can evade customs and passport checks in other countries. they take the risk as they are migrants who want to bypass the normal way of travelling to get to a continent called europe

i also think the aussies support their governments policy of stopping people smuggling. it might have been controversial but it worked. also katie is controversial and sometimes is very to the point and treads a line but behind this bluntness she does make some good points and has a lot of followers on twitter. i didnt know she had a newspaper column as well

Anyone who is so low in wit, compassion and intelligence that they're reduced - for kicks and attention - to referring to another human being as a cockroach has no point worth talking about.

Can you not find someone with a more intelligent approach to this issue to support? There are plenty of journalists out there who manage to not compare vulnerable human beings to cockroaches but still manage to make relevant points about the problem Europe faces re human trafficking.

Just reading many of the above comments with a degree of pride. All isn't lost. For all I'm feeding her ego by contributing, I would be quite happy never to see or hear from her again. As I've said many times, I actually pity someone who can only feel good about herself by doing what she does. It's so pathetic and if she ever really had to face up to herself and what she does for a living, she'd crack to little pieces..

We need to look at what they are escaping from? Why these people are so desperate to come to Europe? Why they are paying so much money for a place on an over crowded boat, that is then set adrift, to force a rescue...?

And we need to address the issue of traffickers? The fact that many boats are ending up in Greece, shows they do not even know that they themselves are broke and have nothing to give...

In the news there is news from Libya that Christians have been executed by Muslims, that is why people are desperate to leave....and they take such risks because they will die if they stay where they are....We do need to put together an EU solution because Italy is struggling, 700 people drowned, for a dream of a better life.
The US also has a big problem, as do we...it is down to economic problems, high unemployment, rising prices of commodities, lack of respect for human life, political conflict, our efforts of "nation building" which has lead to disaster for millions of people and war....It is very complex, demonising them, de-humanising them, is what their oppressors are already doing...

If everyone who was disgusted by her last column took the same approach and boycotted The Sun, LBC, This Morning and anyone else who decides to exploit the circus she creates for ratings she'd soon disappear off the radar. And that isn't about denying her freedom of speech, she's entitled to hold and express whatever opinions she wants that are within the law, though she's skating very close to the line of inciting racial hatred by dehumanising fellow human beings as 'cockroaches', 'vermin' and a 'virus'. The issue is whether she should be given the privilege of being paid to express those opinions across the national media with The Sun even hailing her last column as 'brilliant'. Would anyone else spouting neo-nazi rhetoric get the same exposure? Unlikely. She gets away with it by couching her opinions in her brand of 'humour' so she has the fall back of saying people are taking her too seriously or that she's provoking debate on important issues. She's created herself a niche and is milking it regardless of how it affects her targets. Personally I don't think she's unintelligent or lacks other options so the fact that she chooses to make her living this way makes it all the worse.
