Our dog has bad diarrhoea, it started yesterday & he still has it today, so that's 24 hours. I phoned the vet & he said to give him boiled rice & chicken breast meat to settle his tummy & slow the speed at which the food is passing through him.

I remember mum & dad giving our dogs that when I was little. I am really worried about him we haven't had him long.

Just wanted some thoughts. Thanks.

Make sure he is drinking as he could get dehydrated, follow the rests advice and if he gets worse or no better make an appointment to see the vet tomorrow. Try not to worry too much though mine have had a runny tummy on and off just lately think the weather may be the problem as it happens every year when it gets hot.

yeah its probably the weather, my two were bad last week. make sure the rice is cool but not cold, ditto with the chicken.

is it a case of him going more often and it being soft/runny or is it just his usual timings but being soft/runny - if its more often than usual then dehydraytion is more of a worry, you can get rehydration sachets from the vets which work well.

is he lethargic? if he is or suddenly becomes lethargic recheck in with the vet, probably taking him in for a check up.

He is just as happy & hungry & affectionate.

He goes almost as soon as we go out which is unusual as he usually waits until we get to the field. He prefers to poop in long grass for some reason. It is like a cow pat but it was worse last night. He also stays in the pooping position for a lot longer, a bit like us I guess when we sit on the loo for ages when we've got the runs as we think there's more to come. He did this like 6 times in one walk last night, but this morning & lunch time only 3 times each walk. He is drinking lots of water as I keep checking his dish & giving him fresh water. He did it on the kitchen floor last night which he has never done before. He gets out for walks 4-5 times a day by either me or my gf.

I'm going to boil the chicken breasts, use the water to cook the rice & then give it to him tonight at his tea time. I know not to add anything like seasonings to the food & to skim off the fat from the chicken stock. Also the vet said to cut his food in half so he's not getting too much,

Yup, sounds like he's got a bit of heat stroke, but as long as he's still himself it's generally something that will pass, obviously the chicken and rice will help. You could also get some charcoal tablets into him (I'd leave it 24 hours to ensure the rice etc has started to settle things) which can help too.

Edit: my two have been suffering and one exploded in his crate which never happens, and lots of work dogs are doing the same so there maybe a bug going round too.

I was told to starve mine for a day as long as they drink water.

Then only give a tablespoon of rice or chicken every few hours.

It did the trick.

I also spoke to a wifey at work & she said she knows a lot of peoples dogs have the runs too. She feeds hers raw meat & chicken carcasses & stuff. I thought you weren't meant to give dogs poultry bones as they can get stuck in their throats

That's cooked bones, raw should be fine I am told.

Yes it's cooked bones, although chickens the most common no-no, all cooked bones should be avoided really, especially if you have a dog with sensitive stomach.
If the dogs not on a raw diet ATM don't start giving him/her bones (uncooked or otherwise) as her tummy won't be able to take it, wait until her digestion is back to normal before changing anything.

Ah the poor dear. This weather must be awful on his tummy. Hope he feels well soon.

I'm not away to start feeding him raw meat, it was just an observation. He loved the chicken & rice, funny watching him try to get the last bits of rice with his huge teeth lol.

Ah ok, any raw diet needs to be introduced properly, so if u do decide to go that route, do it slowly.

My dogs often get rice as I eat it a lot so cook extra off for them, mixed in with meat instead of kibble.

not nice, but at least he has a relatively short coat, so it won't stick to his bum feathers like it does with our lad


as it's usually an "i've eaten something i shouldn't have" situation with him, where he's still quite happy and generally "himself" but just having trouble in the poop department.
we usually feed his normal basic kibble diet for the first day (no treats), if it doesn't clear up with normal feeding, the next day he gets two doses of kaolin (one on a morning, one on an evening) and gets a couple of rich tea biscuits instead of his kibble meals, just to line his stomach. (this instead of the 24hour starvation, as this has led to him sicking up bile, due to having an empty stomach in the past)
within 2 days he's usually back to his "regular" self. or at least firming up. if it's the latter, we continue with the kaolin for another day and re-introduce his kibble, giving him small meals and working back up to normal portion sizes.

we went through this a lot when he was younger as he had a teenage phase where the slightest different thing would set him off and it would fly out of both ends (immediately) then just the back end for a few more days.
much rarer these days, usually just the bottom end nowadays too, but we always keep a packet of biscuits and a bottle of kaolin in "just in case" the last lot got thrown out due to expiring, so we've just bought a new lot.
we found this to be the best way to firm him up, but every dog is different.

the chicken and rice diet is what is usually recommended and does work. (the dog usually loves it too)
our old dog used to just pick the chicken off and leave the rice though! Bless her.

I've also heard of poached fish and potato, or scrambled eggs settling an upset stomach as well, but neither of these have suited my boy, he's not an egg dog at all and fish makes the situation worse.

if it goes on for more than a few days though, or he doesn't seem to be drinking, get in touch with your vet again OP, or if your dog isn't quite himself at any point, make a phone call to get him checked over
don;t worry too much though if it's just a runny bum, this weather is causing all kinds of troubles for everyone

I generally don't starve them either, I give small amounts and leave it up to the dog if they want to eat it, from personal experience sometimes you want food, other times you don't, so I presume dogs feel the same way.

I was woken this am at 4.30 by whining and scrabbling in the crate by pup, went down to see and let him out (he never normal makes a peep) and its his turn today! At least he made it to the garden! Definitely something going around.

I'm taking him to the vets, he did it on the kitchen floor again this morning sometime when we were at work & this was between 5am-9am & it was mucousy. He had already been out at half 2am he woke me & again at half 4 before I left for work.

If you've not had him long it could be his food. My dog has a really sensitive tummy and would go from normal to diahorea all the time. Vet and the good folks of DS suggested we switch to chappie dog food. I'd always assumed it was cheap rubbish, it's not, sorted him right out

We give our 14 year old German Pointer dog plain roast chicken and boiled rice with butter when he gets the runs. When it's severe my husband won't give him anything as it's too painful for him and it's horrible to watch. The vets gives the dog Pro-Kollin and we squeeze it between cheese so the dog will eat it. When that didn't work we had to give him tablets the vets provided. They worked thankfully. This last time was extreme and he had a couple of accidents in the hallway when we took too long shopping.

When giving the medicine keep a watch out to see what type of poo your dog is doing. You don't want to reverse it and give your dog constipation and bung them up completely. I hope your dogs on the mend, how is he doing at the moment?

When McGee had a dodgy tummy, I asked the vet about cooking our own food, she just rolled her eyes and said don't bother as Chappie was perfectly fine. She said feed the dogs one brand and stick with it. He's fine now

Yeah we tend to starve my sister's dog if he's got the runs or is being sick. Usually sorts him out then.

I'll never forget the time where we all had to leave him for a good part of the day in the kitchen so lots of newspaper was put down incase he was still poorly and it was everywhere bless the poor mite Cleaning up that was not fun for me but grateful that my sister had put all that newspaper down otherwise it would have been even worse.

Complete recovery, back to 2-3 regular poops a day & no more accidents on the kitchen floor. I took a sample in to the vet but he just gave him a quick look over & told me to reduce his food to half.

Anyway, he's back to normal now thank god.
