Hi all, apologies if this is a dumb question.

Would installing a hard-drive (possibly an SSD) in my PS3 Super Slim, improve the load times and the loading when dying?

I've come from the Xbox world of installing to the hard drive - which gives good load speeds.

Thanks

No it doesn't work like that on PS3. You can't choose what games to install. Some games have a mandatory install and some don't.

Only way to improve load times would be to buy the game via PSN and install it to the HDD which is often what i now do.

As for an SSD, some games benefit from it (Such as Gran Turismo 5) but the majority of them provide a barely noticeable boost of around a second or two, making it not really worth the price point for the space you'd get.

Also the PS3 has no real support for SSDs and treats it like any normal HDD which will reduce its life span quite a bit. Not to mention the PS3 is only SATA 1 which limits speeds to 150MB/s.

Thanks everyone, there's some good advice there. Didn't realise the installing an SSD would have no benefit over an HDD.

There is a benefit, don't get me wrong, just look up Skyrim frame rates on the PS3. The issue is that it's not as big a change as it could be due to SATA 1 interface and the life span of the drive will be poor as the PS3 doesn't support TRIM or anything and treats it like a HDD.

You would be better getting a hybrid HDD if its speed your after.

Nice first post, answering a question that wasn't asked.

Hi - I just had this for my PS3 12gb slim

http://www.ebuyer.com/363299-hitachi...-drive-0j22413

Works absolutely fine. The caddy for it can be found here

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlaySta...=ps3+hdd+caddy

Much cheaper than the 250gb combo pack you can buy officially from Sony. 4 times the capacity too!
