No. It's not making progress. Humanity will destroy itself. Its not a question of if, but when.
Let's take that alien concept. "Let me get this straight," it says. "So you're all very excited about a new baby being born? You are worshipping this baby? A baby that you will pay to live in luxury all its life? And, just a short plane ride away, thousands of children are starving to death?"
It walks back onto its spaceship, tears dripping onto the grass, and decides it might find nicer people in alpha centuri.

I know what your trying to say, and agree with your principle.

It's crazy how in one part of the world, hundreds and hundreds of millions are having obesity problems, where as another part of the planet a bigger number of people are starving to death, what a strange Race we are, a beautiful world ruled by an unhealthy Race.
Utter bilge, I'm afraid. In most African states, the infant mortality rate has halved since the 1980s. Not in spite of westerners, but purely because of the West.

It wasn't that long ago Oui 3 in 'for what it's worth' sang 'there are five billion people plus upon this planet'. Now there are 7+.

It has to go backwards.
Their isn't enough food or resources in the world for 6 billion
The Population has been at 7 Billion for awhile now. and it is only growing.

Technically yes - but a basic humanity appears to have been lost in this development. People have less time to be decent to each other and respect others privacy - and I blame the media and those that seek constant media attention for their private existence for that.

What is the likely future of the world, 50 years down the line, is it going to get better or worse ??
Barring natural disaster the world as a whole is going to get better for humans. There maybe some areas that get worse but overall better.

Has the world been getting better or worse?
I think it has been getting better.
1963 vs 2013
1913 vs 1963
1863 vs 1913
1813 vs 1863
1763 vs 1818
ETC.

Ive had 3+ to think about that and in some ways we have got better ! Better food, health, longer life expectancy. We have a lot more people now than even in 1970 when it was said to be 3 billion, these days its 7.5 billion, though i havent counted them all

We have a different set of problems these days than 100 years ago

Since 1980, we've had 35 years of neoconservatism, with slowly improving conditions for most people since world 2 being completely reversed ........

You see the thing people dont realise about this sort of stuff is that it is mainly fuelled by constant media scare stories, stories of crime, corruption, poverty, global warming, possible disasters, basically doom and gloom on a global scale.

But heres the thing - most stories are actually warnings about the potential of what might happen if we do nothing to prevent it, and stories are reported in such a fashion that we apprently won't do anything about it either...therefore it allows the 'world will end' doomsayers to have a field day.

Y2K was a good example of this...in the early 90's there were stories about planes falling out of the sky, of us being relegated to the stone age because all electrical devices would fail. But that was only if we did nothing about it. But we did...companies employed software engineers to start adjusting all systems, appliances, computers etc for years running up to Y2K.

And...nothing happened.

I always like to remember the Y2K scenario in those terms. Because in reality things usually do get done, people do work to prevent the worst happening. And yes things can often be bad, but never quite the 'end of civilisation as we know it' bad that people believe will happen.

You make some good points I remember the build up to the year 2000 and all the hype about planes falling out of the sky because their onboard computer system couldnt recognise the digit 2000' or something along those lines, and in reality nothing happened.

Some religious people claim too that there are more earhquakes now, when in reality we have a lot more seismograph meters around the world, for example at one stage there was only 35 meters, now we have 1000 or so, so we are recording more, and even small earthquakes that are recorded count towards the data recorded. So it looks like we have more earthquakes. Religious people take earthquakes and wars as signs of the end times of course

I do however sometimes wonder where the planet is heading ? This is also the first generation of young people that are exposed to this level of technology, computers etc, overwhelmed abd bombarded by screens of one sort or another. And im not always sure how much of a good thing that is, especially some of the stuff thats on the internet that young developing brains can be exposed to that can mould their thinking, or give them an unrealistic view of people and relationships.

The world still sees the same old problems, murderous insane wars, a massive highly profitable global arms trade, big inequality and so on. And a growing population which may bring problems to the planet ?

A Higher intelligence is going to wipe us all out before any war of some sort. I'm predicting something that can out compute our brain power will be here in the next 15 - 20 years, once it is, we're fooked.

The human world drama goes in Cycles.
Destruction of the Iron Age (now) leads to rebirth -Golden Age using all the modern tech to sustain it - leads to Silver Age -the "fall" leads to Copper Age -leads back to Iron Age.

A self-sustaining cycle. We now are creating the technology needed to make life easy in the Golden Age, but at the same time the conditions for the masses are declining & can only end in Destruction.

Things do seem to go in cycles, true. Empires rise and fall
