Wow I'm really happy for him too. I half thought that it would flop when it was announced as a cover album but then he has a lot of buzz on facebook, twitter and instagram so he does have quite a large fan base. Good for him.

When do we know the sales figures?

I am so pleased for Jahmene voted for him every week on X Factor.

The album is brilliant not a typical cover album.

Someone on another forum had worked out by the Now album selling `16 to 1 of his album, and from the number of sales the Now already has, that he has sold a bit over 8000 copies. They also noted that Marcus Collins had 24000 first week sales but seems to have been more unfortunate with his release week. I am glad that he will have a number one album though in all likelihood. I doubt many people will have a running record of actual sales, and a good spin can be put on it peaking at the top spot.

I was really shocked by this when I seen the update. Album sales are absolutely abysmal at the moment though, so I can't see him selling amazingly. Regardless, what a great achievement (even if I do find a cover album ridiculously lazy.)

Feel conflicted by this. On one hand I'm happy for Jahmene as he seems like a lovely guy who is thoroughly deserving of good things happening to him. And I'm also impressed he's managed this with very little promotion or airplay.

On the other hand, I think it sends out a dangerous signal to record companies that taking the easy route of releasing a hastily-assembled cover album (no matter how close the songs are to the artist's heart) is a money-making activity worth pursuing.

Still, if it encourages RCA to invest a bit more in Jahmene for his next album release then I guess it's really the best possible outcome.

I agree. I must say though I was not expecting his album to do so well. When I heard he was doing covers I felt his career was over before it began. In the past, talent show acts that go on to release covers as their first offering usually disappear from the music scene quite quickly if the album is a flop.

I hope he will still be at number one on Sunday, but I really want to see some original material from him on his second album.

The thing is the classical crossover genre always release covers, Susan Boyle only releases covers for example, Alfie Boe releases covers. It's standard practice in that genre and plenty of people like that and buy records of covers. It's the pop genre who expect originals all the time.

Yes they do expect it but the problem with that is every time they continue to do this the sales reduce as well as the overall chart position as people expect more original songs. Susan Boyle's sales of covers have dropped year after year, same with Alfie Boe up until his appearance in the 25th anniversary of Les Mis which boosted his next album sales massively.

Sorry, I wasn't clear really. Alfie Boe's albums since his Les Miz appearance are what I was referring to. He has had 3 albums since then and all have done well.
The level of sales of the CC artists is not expected by labels to be in the same ball park as pop records. Look at Hayley Westenra, 12 years with Decca but her sales are never very high.

There are many albums of original music which fail, cover songs are songs which have stood the test of time because they are good songs which are popular.

Classical crossover artists do release original albums but not as commonly as they do covers. It's just that a lot of people on this forum seem to measure things by the 'pop' record sale standard and it's not the same for a CC artist.

Not sure I'm explaining myself very well lol

I always laugh when people claim of classical and classical crossover that "its just covers, not original music". Well, I dont think Strauss is going to be coming up with anything new in the near future.

I see a Pitbull feature on the next Mozart album.

Great news and really pleased for him BUT doubt the sales will be very much. This is the worst quarter of the year before album sales hot up for the last quarter of the year when everyone and his dog will be releasing to try and get some of the lucrative share of the xmas market.

I would call Susan Boyle, Michael Ball, John Barrowman and Jahmene more MOR than classical crossover

I love this album. I really think Greatest Love of All is amazing - a brilliant duet. Halo is lovely. Jahmene has a great voice and it comes over so well with this album - so well done to him.
