I don't intend any disrespect towards Minnie's Dad but I thought he was rather an ordinary looking guy and yet he managed to bag a wealthy wife and a stunning mistress. He must have had a great personality.

I think I can understand why her father threw his medal away. He won it right at the start of the war when such acts of heroism were unusual. But as the war progressed they would have become more commonplace amongst aircrews every night on raids over Germany. As he later became a Pilot Officer he would have seen this and thought that every serving crew member deserved a medal and probably felt unworthy. My own father in law survived the war as a Rear Gunner and saw many actions but he didn't get a DFM.
It was suggested that he believed other crew members should have been decorated, particularly his close friend whose body they had to leave in the aircraft when it sank.

I think Sir Wilshaw is dead.

The wife may be dead as well, if they had children they may have known more about the medal and what happened, possibly had family/wedding photos with Driver ancestors.
Sir Edward Wilshaw died 3 March 1968

Not expecting much but the Barnados side of the story might be interesting.

Why not? I find WDYTYA is like a box of chocolates....... you never know what you are going to get until you watch it. Hopefully Lesley's story will be full of surprises for her.

What no comments on tonight's program?

That was quite emotional at the end, George's glasses and Lesley talking about her Dad Jack.
Shame there wasn't more about her Great Grandad, Charles and his large family, very unusual fella marrying a woman 2 days after she'd given birth.

I thought it was a bit odd towards the end that she spent so much time following George's history when he wasn't even related to her.

Found tonights episode to be of exceptional high quality. This was a programme showing how the social system was, say about 100 to 150 years ago.

Showed how some people were very kind and considerate to others.

Showed how someone at a great age, was still willing to look after young people and impart good knowledge.

It was 2 days after the baby William was baptised, so prob gave birth earlier. I did think that he couldn't be the father as they could have waited and had him christened after the marriage.

Also Lesley went on and on about how wonderful her Gt Gt Grandfather was, but he was paid 5shillings per child to take them in, quite a bit of money in those days

I've always found Lesley likeable for some reason considering I've never met her and even more so after tonight's episode. Glad that she made a point of acknowledging her Dad at the end. Nearly freaked out when she said in the opening segment that her birth mum and dad met at work in Manchester - I immediately thought of Brady & Hindley

It was the adoption link, she felt closer to her adopted father rather than her birth father.

If anyone believes they have a relative who was among the children sent to Canada, I am admin for a Facebook group which assists people who are researching 'British Home Children'

https://www.facebook.com/groups/60555734110/

It is also worth searching the index below to see if any of your relatives were among the more than 100,000 children sent overseas http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/d...n/index-e.html

George Maybury's two siblings seem to have also gone to Canada according to an online tree. His brother died in WWI though.

George died 1926 but his sister lived to 1961 - presuming right tree! I wonder if they were contact with each other?

Now that is really interesting. Would be interesting to know if they did manage to keep in touch.

I was thinking that too, but when she got there and talked with the Guy - I got it. He was able to tell Lesley more about her Granddad, which was all fascinating.

Wasn't it GGF or GGGF?

Presumably the researchers had found the tree online and contacted the man in Canada and realised it could be good line to follow.

I enjoyed Minnie Driver's episode and Lesley's tonight.
I'd recorded last week's episode and watched the two back to back.

I thought Lesley was very respectful how she insisted that she would meet her half brother and half sister off camera first.
Funny when she pointed to her nose indicating the obvious family resemblance
Her last piece to camera about her foster Dad was very touching.

The Maybury siblings were highlighted in a documentary about WW1 a few years back, and showed the sister visited George on more than 1 occasion, and also they wrote many letters to each other. I think the George Maybury shown on the prog was on the WW1 doc too.

BIB....It wouldn't have mattered as Williams birth would have been officially registered as Bush as his mother was unmarried.

Also think Williams later marriage under his name Bush being used as "evidence" of Charles not being his father is a little bit of overegging the pudding, (as it makes Charles out to be some sort of saint), when it could simply be down to Charles never getting round to formally adopting William.

As to the prog in general, over half of it was spent on the Maybury/Barnardo angle, so a bit different to others, but still an enjoyable episode.

I really enjoyed last nights episode, and thought it was lovely that Lesley wanted to find out more about George, shame she didn't manage to find out what happened to the other boy, it was really interesting
