Great story for Una, and she seems a lovely woman.

I also know that pastry shop!
Looks like a lovely little area now. Una is so lovely also. So ladylike. They don't make 'em like her anymore. She is funny though.

Loved her reaction to finding out her granddad worked for Rowntrees and she was a Rowntrees Chocolate girl! lol

And seeing her as the Dairy Box Girl!

(I'm a bit behind watching this cos I'm on V+!)

when you reach her age, and you have her money... dye your hair, wear thick red lipstick, and stupid glasses, and dress like the French woman EDITH PIAF and you will scrub up well too.

When you get to that age you can look and do what you like. Blow what people think and good for her.

Hear hear.
Interesting how many coincidences there are in her family history. I think this is a good start to the new series.

She was the Rowntrees chocolate girl. Of course you were dear. ROFL. Hilarious.
Come on now, steady on. That's just an urban myth...

Aaaaaw that was a great episode. Very informative. I heard Alesha Dixon say she was from Welwyn Garden City like it was a bad thing or something. But it looks really beautiful.

The film of her being Dairy Box girl was funny! But very 1960's advert-wise!

Sorry, I meant it had that very 1960's look to it. It certainly looked more 60's than 50's. But maybe that's just cos it was such a good quality picture! lol

Yes, she did say 1955. Una was 18 in 1955, (Born May 1 1937) though she thought she was about 21 at the time.

And yes, she was lovely.

The ad they played was from the 60s but the Rowntrees archivist said they had loads of ads featuring Una and the earliest they had was from 1955 - the year ITV commercial television launched.

Fascinating programme and great start to the series.

I did miss Mark Strong's narration though.

You've got to laugh at her mannerisms. I lol'd when she grabbed her big flowery hankie on the train to cry. She's such a luvvie. Bless.
Yes it made me smile. It almost looked like a pair of spare pants she'd grabbed by mistake (and who uses hankies these days?).

Ah, thank you! I was right originally then, it WAS a very typical 1960's advert!

I liked Cheri's narration. Presumably when this programme first started it took people time to get used to Mark Strong doing the narration!

I did enjoy that, and I think Una was an interesting choice as she's still very well known but isn't all over our screens all the time.

I thought it was a really interesting story and quite sad that she never knew her paternal grandparents. What an amazing maternal great great grandfather she had as well. I thought he was going to have been from 'the top drawer' but to have such vision and not have money and position to back it up was a fantastic achievement.

I liked her even more when she said that her great-grandfather was a 'sir' but she had never told anyone 'because it would be like bragging wouldn't it?'. What a lovely lady she is, and not snobby at all. I bet Nigel Havers is.

I seem to remember the first series was narrated by David Morrissey - but Mark Strong sounds very like him.
They obviously decided on a radical change with Cheri! Presumably Mark wasn't available this series.

I really liked tonight's episode with a good mix of a likeable celebrity, interesting characters and social history. I've always thought that Nigel Havers comes across as likeable and self-deprecating so I hope I'm not disappointed and he is snobby as you suspect.

Was it a hankie? I thought she grabbed a tea towel to cry into .

I agree Flukie. Ive always found her voice to be the same even when she was in Til Death us do part.
She even talked like that when she was Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummage in the 70's. Perhaps a bit louder, but very much the same.
